The Winning Poems

UMBRELLA IN A BRIEFCASE
Robert Saxton

"No one's suggesting we try to put the rain back into the sky."

Umbrella in a briefcase,
           precipitate through the city,
folded lungs in a high-risk drowning zone.

Your goal is to be in great shape for the meeting,
powder dry when the time comes
           to foist aloft your dream.

Your objective is to breathe yourself into control,
           distil innocence,
           eyes resourcing the future.

Your purpose is to be at work, awake, ahoy
           when the gooks sail by
           to pilfer the dew.
