Descendants of Sir Henry Webb

This is a copy from Jim Webb's website at http://jimwebb.rootsweb.com/ so that you can read here, especially for a few of us who still don't know how to follow the links.  I am in NO way trying to steal his pages.  They are still HIS, not mine.  I am merely trying to help my family.  For those of you who can follow the links, I suggest that you also go look at his site.  He did a great job!

Sir Henry Webb here might be our ancestor...or maybe not.  Even though many Webbs had moved elsewhere, some stayed in Pennsylvania and Virginia, especially four Webb brothers who decided to live in Virginia.  That is where most of our ancestors came from.  Most names seemed unfamiliar later on here comparing to our lineage.   Also, I have read somewhere about Loretta Lynn's lineage, claiming that they also came from this lineage, but I am still not sure.

Read below.  I'll let you be the judge.  There are 14 pages.

First Generation

1. Sir Henry WEBB was born on May 15 1350.

The WEBB family was originally from Dorset, one of the shires in England. For nearly two hundred years the WEBBs had resided in this place before Alexander Jr with his four sons came to America. The brothers had become quite wealthy. They sold their estate in England for a large sum of money prior to their departure. This English property was inherited through their ancestor, Sir Henry Webb. A copy of the letter which Catherine Parr sent her Council (Cabinet Ministers) asking them to grant her beloved friend, Henry Webb, the lands and estates that had been mentioned for him is still in existence. These lands had been confiscated by the King at the suppression of the monasteries and were located in Dorsetshire, England. In later years they became of value to the children who came to America.

9. Sir Henry Alexander WEBB (John Alexander, John Alexander, William, John, Geoffrey, Henry) was born on May 11 1510 in Stratford, Warwickshire, England. He died about 1544 in England.

It was said that Sir Henry Alexander Webb (1510-1544) established the family for all future time, since to him “for valiant deeds of his father”, Sir John Alexander Webb, of Oldstock, “who was an officer under Kings Henry VII and VIII”, the present generally accepted emblem, or coat of arms, was granted. This heraldic ensigna of rank in the New Nobility, that of the thegus, owe their origin in personal service to the prince then reigning. The New Nobility was accordingly one of office due to meritorious service. The device of hereditary coat of armour, a growth of the twelfth century, did much to define and mark out the noble class throughout Europe. When once acquired by grant of the Sovereign, it went on from generation to generation. They who possessed the right of coat of armour formed the class of nobility or gentry. Sir Henry Alexander Webb married Grace Arden, sister of Robert Arden. Mary Webb (Shakespeare's grandmother) married Robert Arden, brother of Grace.

Henry married Grace ARDEN, daughter of Thomas ARDEN, about 1523 in Stratford, Warwickshire, England. Grace was born about 1512 in Wilmcote, Warwickshire, England. She died on Dec 3 1539 in Windsor, Hartfordshire, England.

They had the following children:

+ 12 M i Sir Alexander WEBB
+ 13 F ii Agnes WEBB
14 M iii Henry WEBB was born on May 15 1537 in Stratford, Warwickshire, England.

10. Mary WEBB (John Alexander, John Alexander, William, John, Geoffrey, Henry) was born on Feb 5 1511 in Stratford, Warwickshire, England. She died before 1550 in Stratford, Warwickshire, England.

Mary Webb married Robert Arden and Abigail married Richard Shakespeare. Of the first marriage Mary Arden was born and of the second marriage John Shakespeare was the issue. These cousins, Mary Arden and John Shakespeare married and were the parents of William Shakespeare, the poet.

Mary married Robert ARDEN, son of Thomas ARDEN, about 1530 in Warwickshire, England. Robert was born about 1497 in Wilmcote, Warwickshire, England. He died on Dec 16 1556 in Warwickshire, England.

They had the following children:

+ 15 F i Mary ARDEN
+ 16 F ii Margaret ARDEN
17 M iii Thomas ARDEN was born about 1540.

19 F v Alice ARDEN was born about 1544.

11. Abigail WEBB (John Alexander, John Alexander, William, John, Geoffrey, Henry) was born on Jun 6 1515.

Abigail married Richard SHAKESPEARE about 1532. Richard was born in 1512.

Richard Shakespeare married Abigail Webb and they had a son, John Shakespeare who married Mary Arden, the youngest child of Robert and Mary Webb Arden. John and Mary Shakespeare had seven children. The first two died in infancy and the third was William Shakespeare, the greatest of the English poets. Both grandmothers of William Shakespeare were WEBB girls, Abigail and Mary, daughters of Sir Alexander Webb and sisters of Sir Henry of Hampton Court.
