Field Medic O.C.C.

In emergencies or in combat, physicians are not always immediately available to treat the wounded. When a medical emergency arises and a physician is not available treatment falls to the Field Medic. The Field Medic is trained in a variety of medical techniques ranging from basic first aid to field surgery. They are not as specialized as a proper physician, but when in the field with a bullet in your shoulder, beggars cannot be choosers.

The Field Medic is trained in the examination and treatment of battlefield patients, interviewing the patients to obtain medical histories. They are trained in basic patient maintenance and diagnostic procedures such as taking a pulse and administering medication (injections, pills, etc). Preparation of biological samples for laboratory analysis as well as basic pathology, biopsy and dissection techniques.

In the field and M.A.S.H. hospitals the Field Medic performs the duties of an Emergency Medical Technician including emergency medical treatment, basic nursing care, minor surgical procedures, clinical laboratory procedures and analysis and diagnostic procedures of potential heath threats and diseases.

Other area’s of expertise the Field Medic must be proficient in is the administration and monitoring of pharmaceutical drugs. They will have to prepare drugs and medications for medical treatment. This includes sterilization of equipment through correct dosage estimations and administration of the medication itself. The Field Medic must weigh and measure drugs and chemicals in the correct amounts and order to produce the prescribed medication. The Field Medic is responsible for all the drugs and chemicals under his or her watch. They must keep records of drug prescriptions and the amounts used. As such they must also be fluent in Military Pharmacy Laws and regulations. If drugs go missing from a Field Medics stores, he or she will be held responsible. If the Field Medic is found to be falsifying records or selling the drugs stiff punishments will soon follow.

Like all medical personnel the Field Medic is sworn to the Hippocratic oath, that they must do no harm. However many Field Medics have adopted a more pragmatic oath, that if a patient is ‘to far gone’ they will administer drugs and medication to make the person more comfortable, but not provide extraordinary services to keep the person alive.
