The goal of this manual is to introduce all children (big
and small) to Personal Computers and Computing Literacy. The primary focus; however, is to ensure
that children learn the fundamental of Computing on the Personal Computer so
that they will be have good workplace readiness skills.
What is Computer Literacy? It is the ability to understand how a
computer works (that is: the functions of the internal electrical
functions and program (operations that direct a computer in the information
age).
What is Computing Literacy? It is the ability to
use the personal computer as a tool to enrich ones personal and professional
life.
Overall, after going through the different topics and course work
discussed in this manual, students will have learned:
·
About the basic parts that make up the personal computer
system and about the operations and concepts related to the various parts
(like: the Computer Tower, Monitor, Mouse, Keyboard, Speakers, Headphones,
Microphone, CPU, Memory, and Storage)
·
About the Ethical
(software piracy), Safety-computer
care, computer virus, hacker, cracker, pedophilia, frauds, Human issues (Posture and Disability Access
Options)
that are pertinent to the computing
·
About using productivity Tools/Computing Software (i.e Microsoft Office)- How to access and use such as
Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, MS Project to compile data and
print out information
·
About the Internet (The mother of all Network) and Internet Search Engines
EXPLORING
THE COMPUTER
WHAT IS A COMPUTER?
The brain of the computer is in this tower
A
computer is an electronic machine that is programmable
(machine that relies on predetermined instructions or commands). A computer is capable of manipulating
(moving, arranging, processing, analyzing, or controlling) numbers and data to
produce information that human can use.
A Personal Computer (PC) is one type of
computer that is designed specifically for a person to
use at home, at school, and at work. The computer is multipurpose (has various
uses). For instance, people use the PC
for various activities.
Example of Some of the Ways in Which People Use
the computer
The
major parts of a computer are:
·
Input equipment (e.g Keybord)
·
Output equipment(the
Monitor or Video screen)
·
Storage (e.g Hardrive, floppy disk, CD-R, Zip Drive)
·
Memory: RAM-random access
memory the main memory and ROM-Read Only Memory-the information stored on the
ROM chips cannot be changed
·
CPU (Central Processing
Unit), which is considered as the Brain of the computer-The ALU (Arithmethic Logic Unit) and Control Unit
Just
like human, Personal Computer is equipped with a brain. However, the computer brain is made up of electronic parts such as transistors and resistors. The human brain on the other hand is made up of gray matter, cell, neuron, etc.
Computer Brain Human brain
In a way, computers are like babies, they have to be
instructed. However, never make the mistake to think hat computers are
more intelligent than human, for they are not.
When you close off a computer it is nothing more that metals and hard
plastic.

WHAT
IS THE JOB OF THE CPU?
Sure the CPU (the computer’s brain) is not here for
its good looks!
So
what type of work does the computer’s brain do? It is the:
Oops!
I forget to tell you that not all CPU are equal, just like human some are fast
some slow, some new some old, some just ancient?
Well, ever
so often as computer scientists/engineers working for companies like Intel, IBM, Cyrix, AMD figure
out how to make a better or more competitive CPU, they give their brand of CPU a new name, like Pentium
I, Pentium, II Pentium
III, AMD, K7 Athlon, AMD K6-3 before marketing or selling it.
SOCIAL, ETHICAL, and PERSONAL ISSUES
COMMON SENSE SAFETY TIPS FOR SMALL and BIG KIDS TOO
QUESTIONS
If are allowed to go online and you happen to be
in a chat-room, and some stranger who seems nice as
you for your name and address should you give out that information?
Absolutely not! What Can
Happen: Computer Crooks can:
·
Steal Your Online Banking information, your credit card and personal
Information
·
Get into your E-Mail!
·
Destroy your information with computer Virus or Worm (Deleting files
and/or computer memory)
What about sending your picture to someone you
met online?
Absolutely not!
What
about this, you on a company’s website, they say that you’ve won a contest, so
they need your name, social security number, birth date, and address, would you
give out such info?
Absolutely not!
If
you are in a chatroom and someone say
something mean or nasty, should you respond.
No, you should never respond to any
messages, comments, jesters that are mean or makes you feel uncomfortable or
upset. Remember, it is not your fault if you some demon
possessed individual send across a message like that. The best thing to
do is to tell an adult right away.
Kids,
iIf your parents and you established certain rules
about going on the internet (let’s say you must only
use the internet when there is an adult to supervise you.
Children, listen up, if a legitimate company wants to collect information
from you, whether you won a contest yes or no, that company must first get your
parents permission to get all the personal information they are asking you for. Do not fill out any forms, do not answer
any question. As
a matter of fact, stay away from online contest because it is one way
for companies or individual (cracker, hackers) to put cookies (secret
information collectors) to steal off your computer information. So while you are
fooling around with their contest nonsense, they are ripping you and your
parent off.
Do
the right thing close out of that window (screen). Doing so would protects
your safety, and also your privacy too. If you still don’t get it kid, go ask your parents about the importance
of protecting your privacy and theirs also.
WHAT ABOUT USER’S PERSONAL HEALTH?
·
POSTURE (MONITOR SHOULD BE POSITIONED 2-3 FT AWAY
FROM USER)
·
CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME (INFLAMED LIGAMENTS THAT PRESS ON A NERVE IN
THE WRIST WHERE THE CARPAL BONES ARE)
·
COMPUTER ACCESSIBILITY FOR THE HANDICAPPED
Copy and Paste information to WordPad or Notepad
