Reactivity Lab
Background information:
Displacement reactions:
Magnesium is more reactive than copper, thus when magnesium is added into copper sulfate, it will form magnesium sulfate, and pushing the copper a side (CuSO4 + Mg à MgSO4 + Cu). This happens because magnesium is more reactive than copper. It is like if a small guy walks around with a girl, ad a big guys comes and pushes the small guy away, and takes the girl with him.
A metal’s reactivity depends on its group number, (how many electrons each atoms has in their outer shell).
What each element is use for
1) Magnesium is used very commonly in fireworks [Magnesium sulfate, pure magnesium would make a tremendously vigorant reaction/eplosion, . It is also used covering steel stuff [Such as oil Tanks], in order to not let it oxidize
2))Iron is used in many things, Such as cars, making steel, and much, much more
3)Calcium is used for buildings, in our body it makes the bones stronger
4)Zinc, It used mainly as a compound of iron and steel, because of the fact that it doesn’t corrode .
5.Lead, is used in our pencils ,due to its high density and nuclear properties, lead is used as protective shield for radioactive materials.
6.Copper, is mainly used for wires cables etc, because of the fact that it is a great conductor of heat and electricity.
Hypothesis:
I believe that the reaction series will look like this:
Ca |
Calcium |
Mg |
Magnesium |
Zn |
Zinc Note: Fe is about as reactive as Zinc |
Fe |
