I bought this car in the summer of '95 as a replacement for my smashed up '80 Monte Carlo which had left me driving my rusty calf shit brown '74 Chevelle with no rear brakes. At that time the car had a mildly beefed up Pontiac 350 under the hood (not the stock engine which was a 6 cyl). It was a sharp looking car with dual exhaust and a set of Keystone rims. I beat the living snot out of it on the Wisconsin backroads for about six months before buying a newer truck and parking the car. Then one day came along a buddy of mine named Dan (a.k.a. Danow) who decided that it was time he got a real set of wheels besides driving mommy's and daddy's blue Dodge Reliant ( I don't know anybody would give up driving a cool Reliant). So off Danny went beating the living snot out of it on the Wisconsin backroads and at our local drag strip before huffing the motor. If you checked out the other featured Pontiacs I suppose you noticed that we rebuild a lot of them. Wam bam and the engine was out and on the stand, go fast ideas started to run through our heads when the old saying "There's no replacement for displacement." popped into mind. The next thing we knew we had a '73 Pontiac 455 sitting on the stand instead of the 350, we tore it down and sent it off to the machine shop. When we had it all back together we had 425 horse motor nestled in Grand Prix with a th350 tranny with comp springs, shift kit, and a 2500 stall converter. We popped a set of 3:60 gears in the back, hit the highway and smoked the tires to the wires. The power of the 455 soon crippled the metric 10 bolt in the back and we parked it due to lack of funds. I have heard Danow speak many times of the glory days when the GP was running and he vows that it will soon be tearing up the roads of Wisconsin. |
