First tell us little about history of your band, from what country are =
you, and discography:
MARTYR is from Quebec, Canada.
We took few years of learning, then we released a first Demo in 1995.We didn't promote it
very waited for the 1997 release of Hopeless hopes to really start promoting the band.
Since then, we're more active and we're about to record and then release the new album,
Warp Zone, in February or march 2000.=20
1.Who are the band members:
Daniel Mongrain: Lead & Rhythm guitars, lead vocals
Francois Mongrain: Bass, lead & backing vocals
Pier-Luc Lampron: Rhythm & lead guitar
Patrice Hamelin: Drums
2.How did you got your name and what does it means:
I found it after comparing to many other possible names. The name Martyr was chosen at
last because it was the best word to express the pain we endure every day without giving
up. It's a state of mind.We must hang on to our beliefs, principles and goals, even if
sometimes everything may seems to be against us.
3.What music stile do you play and compare it to some
similar bands:
We could call this Technical-progressive Death metal.
4.Some of your favorite groups:
Cynic, Meshuggah, Slayer, Devin Townsend, Geezer Butler...
5.Your opinion about underground and commercial music
scene:
There is no bridge between the two. How could commercial music brainwashed people ever
have an interest in underground music if they know it's existence only by its prejudice
and negative image that medias shows to them? I think that "link" bands are
useful for the underground scene ( Korn, Rage against the machine, etc) to interest people
to more and more heavy bands. If there are no bridge, the jump is way too long to do. We
don't have to like these bands, but nevertheless they have their importance.
6.What was the biggest success of your band:
The Opening act for the latest release from Obliveon at Montreal. It was sick! There was a
lot of people and I think they liked our stuff. It's very encouraging!
7.How many concerts did you played and by your opinion
what was the best:
We play for about 3 times a month, regularly since 3 years. One of the best experience was
at the Milwaukee MetalFest. Also, to play at Montreal and Quebec city is always great.
8.The favorite song you made and why:
We like very much Hopeless Hopes cause the music is fery diversified, a lot of
nuances, and harmonies. The lyrics of this songs are the one I'm very proud of. I wrote it
in one shot. When this happen, I'm sure I'll like it.Song can reflect a lot of situations
for everyone.
9.Where you on some local radio show (or something like
that):
We sometimes participate in local radio shows (interviews). We like this a lot. It's
important that radio lets underground bands express themselves.
10.Do you think that underground music need more attention
of media and what is your opinion about big music televisions and radio stations(such as
MTV,Viva.....):
Definit ?ld be less hesitant to know bands. They would be able to hear them and learn to
appreciate their music before buying CDs without knowing if they gonna like it. And there
would be less prejudices toward metal.
11.Do you have support of local metal fans:
Yeah, and this is very important for us! They give us a lot of energy. And we try to give
them more than what they're expecting to get.
12.Plans for the future:
Some maybe US and probably a video. Also: getting a label contract as soon as possible!
13.Say something for the end:
Thanks a lot for the interview! For the metal fans, visit our Web site and keep supporting
metal bands!
