1.Who are the band members:
Our current line-up is: Me (Mikael) on vocals, guitar, keyboards, Tim on bass, Gregg on
drums and Justin on guitar.
Although on the second album I do play the drums on one song and Gregg does a few solos in
one song. Each of us is a guitar player so we all contribute to the songwriting.
2.How did you got the name:
I came up with it. It is primarily a reference to the winter time. During the winter
months, the nights are longer than the days. To view this yearly cycle as a
"struggle" or "battle" is much like viewing it as
the ancient civilizations did. So during the winter, the night conquers the day, in that
it is the dominant energy. The battle/struggle reference is meant to reflect the nature of
our music. It's barbaric, warlike, loud, much like the clash of a battle between two
sides. This band name also is linked metaphorically to the themes of the debut CD
"The First Snowfall" which deals with the onset of winter, and the theme
continues onto the next album "Rebellion Is The Art Of Survival".
3.What is the music stile that you playing and compare and compare it to some
similar groups:
We are not a band that's easy to categorize. Although the general essence is black metal,
we also incorporate some (true) death metal, a little bit of atmospheric doom, and some
classic heavy metal into our
sound. My vocals are not all done in the same style. Instead they fluctuate from song to
song, especially in our newest material. I don't think we really sound like any one band.
We have our own sound. Even the
reviews of our debut CD said so, and our next album should solidify that ascertain. Our
music is atmospheric, with each epic song twisting and turning into different moods and
tempo changes. There is no overuse of keyboards, and no lack of heaviness.
4.Some of your favorite groups:
My personal favorites are perhaps the ones that I first got into in 1985 that still, to
this day, are a part of my listening pleasure: Mercyful Fate, Bathory, Celtic Frost,
Artillery, Iron Angel, Piledriver, Metal
Church, Malhavoc, Necrovore, Death, Destruction, Living Death, Slayer "Hell
Awaits", Exodus "Bonded By Blood", Sepultura "Schizophrenia", and
Possessed. I'm HEAVILY into old Judas Priest and I really like the grim atmospheres in the
"first wave" of Norse bands: Emperor/Enslaved split CD, Dark Throne, Immortal
"Diabolical...", Satyricon, Gehenna, and Ulver. There's also some GREAT classic
stuff I've discovered in the past 6 years that I listen to allot like Pokolgep Tormentor
(hun), Master's Hammer, Kat (pol), Turbo (pol), Strattson, Sacrifice (jap) and other rare
obscure bands. Some more recent albums I've been enjoying are
Diabolical Masquerade, Dolorian, And Oceans, Mental Home, and Horna.Gregg is really into
old Judas Priest, Razor, Living Death, Iron Maiden, and allot of Swedish black/death
metal. Justin totally worships Opeth. And Tim's favorites are Ved Buens Ende, Gorgoroth,
Demoniac (nz) and Ulver.
5.Your biggest success:
Getting signed to Hammerheart and releasing our debut CD. Now we await the unleashing of
our second opus.
6.Best concert that you played on:
With ANCIENT in February 1998. That was a great show. It's the only time we've played with
a black metal band. Our other shows were with death or grind bands.
7.Your opinion about commercial music:
It's commercial because the record companies make it so. Even some "commercial"
bands do retain their original sound, but if you mean "mainstream" music, I HATE
most of it.
8.Plans for the future:
To get our next album out, to find a keyboard player and a session guitarist for live
shows, and to PLAY some LIVE shows!!!
9.Your opinion about metal underground scene in you country:
It sucks. It's all death grind shit. Not very many bands do anything much original. The
bands that are extraordinary are far apart. I think recommendable US bands are: Absu,
Bloodstorm, Corvus Corax, Winds Of The Black Mountains, and a few others that are escaping
my memory right now. Our scene is scattered and shallow.
10.Say something to our local bands:
I don't know of any Yugoslavian bands now that I think of it, except for some 1984
demo-band with a horrible sounding demo. Who is from Yugoslavia? I;d like to hear some
Black Metal from that region if any
exists, or maybe some obscure '80's speed/death.
11.Would you like to play on some concert in my country(Yugoslavia):
Maybe if we ever tour Europe. Well thanks for the interview. Look for our second CD
"Rebellion Is The
Art Of Survival" to be released on Walpurgisnacht (April 30th) on
Hammerheart Records.
