Wulfila interview by Sacir
Camo
Wulfila is Canadian Metal band, here is interview with frontmen Duke Gray!
1. Introduce your band?
The Band is:
Duke Gray - guitar, backing vocals, fx
Bill Chatzopoulos - vocals
Christian Giles - drums
Joe Earle - bass, backing vocals
2. The Metal scene today?
Well I think in Canda it is in need of re-birth because it is so hard
to make it big in Canada and that as a country we turn more radio friendly
and heavy metal is definitly in need of a second look. There is so much music
that comes out these days, that do not have the true feeling of heavy metal
and a lot of veteran metal groups have "sold-out" and given to not doing as
hard songs so they can be on the radio.
3. Any tour plans?
HaHa! We`re not that big! We play shows when we can but we` re taking some
time off to work on some new songs and perfect our older material we don`t
play so much.We have 10 songs now we can use live but there are qiute a few
rejected songs that we`ve recorded as well. No, no tour plans!
4. Your discography?
Well right now we have a 6 song demo called "Daemon`s Grip" and also a live
album with some outtakes called "Where Shadows Lie". We` ll be putting them on
CD soon so of course you`ll get a copy of aech on CD!
5. Message behind the band?
Nothing really secret. The name "Wulfila" is a gothic Bishop`s name, Ulfilas
Wulfila who transcribed the bible into Gothic text. I found his name in a
really big dictionary.
6. Any bands you would like to tour with?
Hmmm.. Well I guess if we ever made it really big I`d like to go on tour with
Black Sabbath (of course), Godsmack, Headstones (they are Canadian),A Perfect
Circle, and I would love to open up for Motörhead! But that`s wishful
thinking!
7. Any message to fans?
Well, we don`t have a lot of fans, friends and family mostly. But I`ll say
thank you supporting us and to my parents who bought me my first guitar 11
years ago.
8. Musical influnces?
There`s so many really. I`d say that the roots of Metal for me are important:
Sabbath, Judas Priest, Venom, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and of course I`m a die
hard Pink Floyd fanatic which is interesting seeing that we play heavy metal!
There`s too many to list! Floyd is and will always be my true love to music
groups.
9. Who did inspired you lyrically?
It`s hard to pinpoint where everything comes from. The song "Where Shadows
lie" is about The Lord of the Rings, in particular the Ring Wraiths who hunt
Frede down to obtain the one true ring but fail. Most songs about good vs.
Evil are almost always about the adventure of the hero and everythings a happy
ending by killing the evil side and it leaves you feeling good inside. Not
this song. It`s more about the darker side of the story and the dark hunt for
the one soul who possesses the ultimate ring of power.Another song we have
(un-recorded) is called "Nightmare", the idea behind it is about, you average
person falling asleep and being led down to very dark and shallow place full
of totured souls, blind eyes peering from every head and this person is
basically given a term of Hell you can only imagine and being so terrified and
shaking you spent alnight in this nightmare only to be waken up by your alarm
clock screaming, in your face. Those are two songs that stick out in my mind.
All the others are mostly poems I wrote over the last 12 years put to music.
Ideas for them come to mind just from things I see around me or something I
hear and it just takes off from that mostly. Sometimes songs or lyrics come
from thoughts in your head that you just can`t get out unless you write it
down and the music usually comes later.
10. Any closing comments?
Music may be a form of expression but there`s not a lot of freedom in it
because of censorship and religious groups that go on crusades to ban music of
all kinds and in turn it almost helps bands become famous because today`´s
youth just as generations before will see something and what it`s all anout if
it`s been restricted or told by parents or the authorities that it`s wrong or
bad! A good rule of thumb is to enjoy music for what it is and not become
obsessed by it. Music is NOT a reason to commit suicide or do drugs, nor are
the lyrics a reson to do those things. There are reasons why groups write
about these things and it`s not a reason or excuse for you to do it. Music
should be a jubilation of talent and your appreciation for it and inspiration
to be musical yourself. It`s not a vehicle for doing stupid things.
