Notable locals' trips down memory lane

"I think the vacation that stands out the most is my most recent one, over New Year's Eve. We went to St. Martin in the Caribbean, and stayed at La Sammana. It's wonderful. I've never been into big complexes, where you stay on the 14th floor. I prefer having our own bungalow or hut, and La sammanda has those. I think the best ones are K-11 and J-11, two bedroom bungalows that are on top of one another. The island is multicultural, and we rented a Hundai four-wheel drive, and went to all of these deserted beaches.

"One day we went to Anguilla, and island that's a 30-minute sailboat ride away. That's the island we want to go back to when we return to the Caribbean. It was almost completely deserted. The 1995 hurricane hit both islands pretty badly, but there are still some nice hotels on Anguilla, and it's beautiful. When you arrive, people meet you at the ferry to try to get you to rent a car, and you have to pay $5 to get a driver's licence. It's a scam, but we drove around all day and loved it.

"The year before we went to the Big Island of Hawaii and stayed at Kona Village in a thatchted roof hut; they call them hales (pronouced hal-ee). Our hale was real secluded, about five minutes from anyone else, with our own hammocks. There are no telephones, no TVs, and all of the huts are connected by walkways through lush plantings. The whole resort is in the middle of a lava field, but it's completely secluded. We went to the luau the last night. It's touristy, but fun. I had the most amazing massage at Kona Village. I was like catatonic."
