I was born in central Illinois in 1962 and grew up a Cardinal fan in a household split down the middle. My dad and I are Cardinal fans,.... my mom and brother are Cub fans,..... and my sister couldn't care less! I grew up to Jack Buck calling the play-by-play over my little AM radio. I loved it. I remember coming home from school and watching the end of the Cub games on TV. It was AMAZING how many ways the Cubs could lose a game. My ridicule of the Cubbies frequently led to a wrestling match between me and little brother! ;^) As far as playing the game and sports in general, I only played Little League. I was ok, but frankly, the game absolutely bored me. My love was football! I played 7 years including a year in college. I got injured in the 3rd game, got a "C-" in my major and an "A+" in drinking and decided to get out of school. I attended a JC and was coaching junior high football for a couple of years and decided to join the Air Force. The Air Force years(in Plattsburgh NY) hold many of my fondest memories. It was there that I learned my career(Flight Simulation), Met my future wife and became a high school coach. Four of the busiest years of my life. It was also here that my love for baseball grew! In my second year, the base put out a notice for softball umpires. I thought, what the heck, football is in the fall so no interference there, OK! The best thing about it was that they had hired one of the founders and rule book writers of the USSSA to give us instruction on the art. It was a weekend crammed with study and mechanics. I ate it up!! I became such a student of the game and the stradegy so that I could anticipate what play may be coming in any given situation. I got out of the AF and moved to Maryland to be a part of a new simulation team for the Navy. What was more important was that it was here that I finally married my wife, started coaching in another high school and continued to umpire. As umpiring goes, I was in the BIG TIME of softball. The county that I lived in(St.Mary's) in southern Maryland was totally ate up with it's softball. So much, in fact, that it approved and erected a 1 million dollar County Softball Hall Of Fame! Can you believe that?! I moved up the ranks and was requested to work huge tournaments that had teams coming from all over the east coast. I loved it!! The downside was, all the county games were held at ballparks owned and operated on drinking establishment grounds! There were several nights that I had to have police escort off the premises. It was about this time that I gave up umping. During this time I also umped in some college baseball games and fast-pitch softball leagues. Great Fun. After 10 years there, I gave up coaching, umping,...... but I kept my wife! ;^) I moved to Georgia in 1998 to work for Delta Air Lines. I am currently a supervisor in simulator support. I love the job. Sure, times aren't stable right now, but it will pick up again. My gaming started with a buddy's father's computer. Early eighties and I was making my "E" attack "K"s and "R"s in the now famous Star Trek game. When I went to college it changed to moving a character e,w,n,s and making a map as you go! It was tough getting lab time to do it,.... but the adventure was never put on hold for too long. Then I started getting into sports games on the computer. Earl Weaver Baseball was my first "deep" sim. I was also playing Statis Pro Football on the side. I got the 1985 edition with my beloved Bears and played it until I couldn't read the numbers any more!! I have been a serious gamer ever since. My main love is strategy of any type. I have to admit that I don't really care for many of the real-time strategy games, but will collect almost any decent turn-based games. War games also carry a special place in my heart. I am a history buff that loves to relive the glory, blunders and horror of war for the US. I also lump baseball and football sims into the pure strategy genre. Steve Kilburn enlisted me into this league 2 years ago. That was the start of league participation for me. I am currently in 3 baseball leagues using DMB. 2 draft and 1 replay. I am also in 2 football leagues using Action!Pc Football, both are draft but one is currently in the 1971 season. I tend to want to be in solid leagues so I can see a history develop for teams and owners. It also allows for me to see if I can finally get over the hump and be competitive. I love a challenge, but would like to win a bit more! ;^) Well, that's me. Long Live BTTF!!! |
