Grexxia and the Kralxxian Religion

By Damon Zeus Pythias

The country of Grexxia (the double X being an integral part of the national language, which is incredibly difficult for outsiders to pronounce) is a nation with a very active and ancient religious culture. According to the Grexxians, the gods had never really intended to create the world. It was an unwanted side effect to the creation of the sun. The gods were tired of trying to read in the dark, so they created a giant light in the sky. They accidentally dropped some construction materials, though, and these turned out to be the world. Of course, they were not in any particular form to begin with, but some of the foul demons decided to shape the material into a homeland for themselves. So, for years after that, the demons inhabited the world, calling it their own. This was before the coming of the great hero-god Kralxx to the world. He found that it had the potential to be a very beautiful place, so he fought off the demons in a long, epic struggle, and finally managed to banish them to the far reaches of the nether realms. This left the place safe for development and habitation. The god then populated the world with his own children. Due to the influence of the demons, some of which still remained, the children of Kralxx lost their immortality and godly powers after living there for a few years. Because of this, the hero-god swore to protect the lesser people, and not to allow them to fall into complete ruin at the hands of the demons. Death was a creation of the demons. These evil creatures found that gaining control of a living human body was difficult, so they found a way to stop the body from working, at which point they could take control of the soul. This process was gradual, though. Kralxx worked at solving this problem, and eventually found a way to save the souls of his descendants from enslavement by the demons.

Cremation is an important ritual associated with death. It is believed that, if a body is left intact after it stops functioning, the demons can get to it, and the person becomes a member of the demon army. If a person is properly burned, then the demons can no longer touch it. The spirit is released, and is taken to a special place created for the souls by the Guardian of the Dead, who was appointed by the hero-god from among his own immortal children.

Most of the Elder Gods do not consciously impact events in the world. Sometimes, however, matters in the heavens will affect the earth. For instance, meteors, comets, and thunderbolts are all the results of problems in heaven. The meteors are debris from celestial building. Construction gods are constantly building new celestial bodies, which is why there are so many in the heavens. Demons, on the other hand, are directly responsible for causing much of the trouble that occurs, and Kralxx and his children (he has both mortal and immortal children) are constantly working to battle the demons, and improve conditions on Earth.

The man generally acknowledged as the founder of Kralxxism was named Orgrexx. The exact nature of this famous man is still debated by Grexxian theologians. He is regarded by the Pralsans (found mostly in northern Grexxia) as a major prophet guided by Kralxx, and by the Garallians (mostly southern Grexxians) as an incarnation of Kralxx himself.

Both Kralxxian sects agree that Orgrexx was a very important person within the history of Kralxxism, and of Grexxia itself. (Well, that excludes the followers of the philosopher Arrahxxe, regarded by some as a false prophet, who brought forth the theory that Orgrexx was either a mythical figure or an amalgamation of several different people.) According to legend, Orgrexx led all of the worshippers of Kralxx to a land of beautiful rolling hills and meadows. He then led the inhabitants of the new nation in several battles against other peoples that tried to claim the land for their own. Eventually, he was taken up to heaven, leaving behind no earthly remains. The Orgrexxians spent much of the next several centuries defending their country against invaders, but the invasions have become much less frequent in recent centuries. After the Orgrexxians no longer had any outsiders to fight, they had a civil war between the Pralsans in the north and the Garallians in the south. This war ended about one hundred years ago, though, and, although the two sects still argue frequently, the disputes have become more verbal and less physical. These disputes are often over religious philosophy, and two of the major ones as of late have regarded animals and women. There are differing beliefs on the functions of animals. Some believe that they were placed there by Kralxx to serve humans. Others believe that they are really demons in disguise. It is traditional to believe that animals are inferior to people. There is, however, a growing belief in animal rights, mostly founded on the thoughts of the famous (or infamous) philosopher Bralnov. Bralnov maintained that animals, like humans, were the children of Kralxx. Although Kralxx was usually represented in images as a shapely young man, it was also widely believed that he could shift shapes at will. Therefore, reasoned Bralnov, why could not animals be children of Kralxx in other forms?

Although the religion is traditionally patriarchal, women are still regarded as just as important to Kralxx as men. They are just not allowed to enter positions of power, because men are said to be more natural leaders, made, as they were, in the image of Kralxx. Some women are bothered by this, and an organization of women has broken away from mainstream Kralxxism to form a cult that worships Lawuuya, the consort of Kralxx. Lawuuya was mentioned in the earliest stories of Kralxx, but very little was said about her. The Lawuuyans, however, regard her as both a motherly sort and a figure of great wisdom. Without her influence, Kralxx would never have had the idea to colonize the world, nor would any of his plans have been developed enough to carry out. She is regarded as sort of a power behind the hero-god, just as some queens have been the true power behind the throne, and other women have helped their husbands in various ways.In recent years, there have even been some men attracted to the Lawuuyan cult. They prefer the wisdom and intellectualism of Lawuuya to the warlike prowess of Kralxx. Bralnov, who was not a Lawuuyan, but did have a deep respect for the cult, predicted that the worship of Lawuuya would become more popular as the nation shifted from warlike to intellectual. Rillel, a female philosopher, and the current leader of the Lawuuyan cult, agrees with this. She thinks that the worship of the warlike god Kralxx came from a time when the country was constantly dealing with invasions and border disputes, and fighting was the most important skill for a person to have. Now that the country is generally fairly peaceful, however, Rillel thinks that brains should be valued more than brawn.
