Birdhouse In Your Soul

In case there is anyone on this planet who does not know this yet, this song is sung from the perspective of a nightlight.

"There's a picture opposite me of my primitive ancestry, which stood on rocky shores and kept the beaches shipwreck free."

A rather obvious reference to a lighthouse.

"I'd be fired if that were my job, after killing Jason off and countless screaming Argonauts.

Jason was a Greek mythological hero, who sailed to the island of Colchis to retrieve the Golden Fleece. His ship was known as the Argo, and its crew as Argonauts. I do not believe that a lighthouse is ever actually used in any of the myths about the Argonauts.

"I don't feel thirty. Give me something to write on!"

Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher," a song occasionally covered by TMBG in concert, includes the lines "I don't feel tardy" and "Give me something to write on." These lines from the demo version probably refer to this song, as well as to the fact that Linnell was (most likely) thirty years old when he wrote the song.
