STORY:
Based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien "The Lord Of The Rings" which is divided into three parts: The Fellowship Of The Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return Of The King. Since part one of the story's first publication in 1954 millions around the world have grown found of this descriptive story of a fantasy world that is so well described it could almost have been history! It was voted in polls around the world as being "Book of the Century" and is amazingly the second most read book after The Bible! It has been loved by generations of readers and is defined as a story of battle between good and evil in a world invented in Tolkien's mind. The adventure is about the struggle for the possession of the infamous 'One Ring' since if it gets returned to it's creator the Dark Lord Sauron, the ring will give him the power to enslave the world.
It took all these decades for the technology of movie making to be able to create the vaste and detailed world described in the LOTR. It also took the wonderful leadership of director/writer/producer Peter Jackson from New Zealand to bring this legendary story to the screen. After more than 3 years of filming and years before that planning this massive project (finishes touches are still being made to this date even!) it finally became a reality with the help of a crew over 2400 and 26,000 extras as well as a large but perfectly cast of internationally renowned actors.
CHARACTERS: (descriptions still in progress so please be patient as it takes a lot of time and research to write this!)
Sauron: He is the Dark Lord of Mordor who forged the 'one ring' in Mount Doom to rule all other rings and have power to make all Middle Earth evil. His name means 'The Abhorred'. He lost his true form when Isildur cut the ring of power from his finger in an ancient battle and took no visible shape again for many long years. When the ring was found years later he regained his power and re-built his evil armies in Mordor to help him find the 'one ring'.
Frodo Baggins: He is an adventurous young hobbit who grew up in Hobbiton and is the cousin of Bilbo Baggins. He inherits the 'one ring' along with the home called BagEnd from Bilbo and years later discovers the ring's real history from Gandalf. He is then forced to travel away from home to hide it from the evil forces being drawn to it. He later volunteers to be the ringbearer himself and has the brave task of destroying by taking it to Mount Doom. He is protected on his journey by the 8 other members of the Fellowship including his devoted friend Sam.
Gandalf aka Gandalf the Grey & Gandalf the White: He is an old but very powerful wizard and friends with Bilbo and Frodo Baggins as well as Aragorn. Her knows the evil power of the One Ring and urges Frodo to destroy it. He joins Frodo and the other selected members of the fellowship as they journey across Middle-earth in an effort to destroy it.
Arwen: She is the daughter of Elrond and grand-daughter of Galadriel. She is an Elf Princess who has defied the laws of her land and has fallen in love with a mortal man, Aragorn. Knowing that her father disaproves, she will have to choose between her family and her love.
Aragorn aka Strider: He is the son of Arathorn, and heir to the Kingdom of Gondor. His ancestor, Isildur, was the King who cut the ring of power from the hand of Sauron. He has served as a Ranger, keeping the peace in Middle-earth. He joins the fellowship to trek across the country to destroy the Ring that threatens his country men.
Sam aka Samwise Gamgee: He is one of the hobbits that is part of the fellowship of nine members. Her is a loyal steadfast gardener and friend of the Baggins family- Bilbo and Frodo. He is not the brightest hobbit, but his love of his home and his master Frodo will lead him on a perilous journey.
Galadriel: She is the Elf Queen of Lothlorien and wife of Celeborn. She is the lady of the Golden Wood and has a magic mirror that allows the looker to see future events. She gives the fellowship food, shelter, advice and gifts to aid them in their journey.
Gimli: He is the son of Gloin with whom he accompanies to the Council of Elrond at Rivendell. He is there chosen to represent the Dwarves in the fellowship of the ring. He always carries an axe as his weapon of choice for doing damage to evil forces he encounters.
Pippin aka Peregrin Took: He is one of the nine members of the fellowship assigned to look after the ring bearer. He is a hobbit of spirit and merriment who would rather spend his time playing tricks with his best friend Merriadoc Brandybuck aka Merry.
Merry aka Meriadoc Brandybuck: He is also one of the nine members of the fellowship and like Pippin is a hobbit of spirit and merriment. He was always a close friend of Frodo Baggins, and with the help of Pippin and Sam, spied out Frodo's plan to leave the Shire and unexpectantly joined him on his journey.
Legolas: He is an elf who hails from the forest of Mirkwood and he was chosen to represent the Elves in the fellowship of the ring. His great skills as an archer and his keen senses are a great asset to the group as they journey into territories of evil.
Saruman: He was once head of the Council of Wise, and he has succombed to the lure of the power of the ring and the dark power of Sauron. His stronghold is Orthanc, and he creates the grotesque fighting Uruk-Hai to attack the fellowship and gain the One Ring. He is enraged at Gandalf for keeping the ring from him once he finds out he knows where it is and has a powerful battle with him.
Elrond:
Boromir: He is the eldest son of Denethor who is the Steward of the city of Minas Tirith in Gondor. At the Council of Elrond he was chosen as a companion in the fellowship of the ring.
Bilbo Baggins: Is a hobbit who found the 'one ring' by accident in his adventures with Gandalf and 13 dwarves (read the novel "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien to learn the whole story). He celebrates his 111th birthday at the beginning of the FOTR as a distraction to vanish out of site and leave Hobbiton to go finish writing his books in peace. When he leaves the Shire he passes all his possessions on to Frodo, including his magical ring. He later is reaquainted with Frodo and his fellow hobbit friends in Rivendell and gives Frodo a vital weapon for his journey; the sword 'Sting' which glows blue when evil forces are nearby.

CULTURES:
Hobbits: Hobbits height ranges between two and four feet tall. Hobbits have pointed ears, curly hair, and oversized feet covered with hair and they never wear shoes. Hobbits love to eat (6 substantial meals a day), brew ale, smoke weed, and garden in the Shire where they live. Hobbits discourage excessive or adventurous behaviour which is why many were surprised that Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry went on such an adventure as told in the LOTR. Hobbits are generally very provincial in nature and are typically untrusting of the outside world. Some hobbits have lived as long as 130 years, and their average lifespan is 100 years. 33 years, the age of Frodo Baggins, is considered "Coming of Age" to adulthood. Hobbits are also called "Little Folk", "Little People", or "Halflings". Hobbits speak a dialect of the common speach, Westron.
Elves: Elves are immortal and do not physically age. Elves do not grow weak as they age, only wiser and more beautiful. Elves have more beauty than any other creature on earth, but also possess the most extreme happiness and sorrow. Elves excel in speach, song and poetry. They were the first people on earth to speak and no earthly creature before them sang. They typically have fiar complexions and colouring, with a few exceptions like the Elven Princess Arwen, who was noted for her rare and unusual dark beauty. In war Elves can be killed with fire or steel and some have been known to die from grief. Elve speak both the Quenya and Sindarin languages (Sindarin is the more modern language that is used in the LOTR movie trilogy).
Dwarves: Dwarves are four to five feet tall with the male dwarves being long-bearded. Dwarves are a stocky, strong and proud race with a resistance to fire and hardier than any other. Dwarves are great miners, craftsmen and work wonders with stone, metals and jewels. In war Dwarves use and axe as their weapon of choice. Dwarves live until around 250 years, getting married around the age of 100. There are substantially fewer Dwarf women than Dwarf men. Dwarves enjoy the company of Hobbits. Dwarves have their own language known as Khuzdul.
Wizards: Five wizards were sent to Middle Earth to serve as advisors to oppose evil. A Wizard's appearance resembles that of an old man, although they age slowly and are actually physically vigorous. Wizards possess great powers of mind and body. They use staffs as means to conduct their power and wisdom. Wizards are forbidden to dominate those in Middle Earth and match Sauron's power. However, Saruman disobeys this rule and joined forces with evil. Each Wizard has his own colour and grade. White being the highest in their order and Grey being the next level in power and wisdom.
Humans: Men are mortal and breed more quickly than any other race besides the evil Orcs. Men are subject to age, disease and the rough elements of Middle Earth. Men are not perceptive to the mind of others, cannot see into the future and are less skilled in lore and crafts than other races. They are considered weak compared to the immortal Elves. Men are a very diverse race. Physically they come in all shapes and sizes and inhabit many different parts of Middle Earth. Hobbits call Men "Big Folk" or "Big People". Throughout the ages of Middle Earth, men rose and eventually became the dominant race.
Ringwraiths: The terrifying Ringwraiths were once powerful kings and sorcerers amoung Men until they were tempted by the power of the Ring and damned to serve Sauron. Ringwraiths wear black hooded cloaks and travel on horseback. The nine Ringwraiths, aka Nazgul or Black Riders, are ordered by their master Sauron to find the Ring and bring it back to him. The leader of the Ringwraiths is known as the Witch-King. As with others corrupted by the Ring, Ringwraiths are invisible to normal eyes and can only be seen becaues of their clothing. Ringwraiths have a keen sense of smell and extremely poor vision.
Orcs: Orcs are fierce warriors and an Orc's only joy is in the pain of others. Orc blood is black in colour and they are cannibals. Orcs have a hideous physical appearance. They are hunched, bow-legged, and their skin is charred. They also often have fanged teeth. Orcs are soldiers of Sauron and when in battle fight using scimitars, poisoned daggers, arrows, and broad-headed swords. Their armor is chain mail and steel plate with dangerous jagged helmets. Orcs are the size of small men and they weaken in sunlight.
Ents: Ents are called the Shepards of the Trees. Treelike in appearance they primarily reside in Fangorn Forest. Though all resemble trees they come in many shapes, sizes, and colours. They have slow musical voices and their native language of Entish. Despite their different ages, they all ahve the same slow, steady, thoughtful expression. And Ent Moot is when the Ents gather together to discuss important matters.
Uruk-Hai: Saruman was not completely pleased with Sauron's Orc soldiers, so he bred new Orc creatures called Uruk-Hai. Uruk-Hai are as tall as the tallest Men, black skinned and black blooded. They are larger, stronger and fiercer in battle then Men, as their only objective is to kill. Uruk-Hai do not weaken in sunlight like the Orcs. When in battle, the Uruk-Hai sometimes wear black armor and carried straight swords and poisoned arrows, and spears. They are also marked on their bodies or faces by the White Hand of Saruman.
Horses: The Rohan people aka the Rohirrim are well known for their horses. The armored helmets of the Riders of Rohan feature flowing horse manes and their reverance to horses is reflected in the architecture of their city Edoras. Shadowfax is Gandalf's horse in "The Two Towers". His breed is Andalusion which is the stunning breed that merry-go-round horses are modeled after. Brego is Aragorn's horse in "The Two Towers". His horse is named after the Second King of Rohan.
LOCATIONS: (descriptions to come soon!)
"The Fellowship Of The Ring":
Hobbiton:
Bree:
Weathertop:
Rivendell:
Moria:
Lothlorien:
"The Two Towers":
Dead Marshes: This place was definitely the smelliest landscape that Frodo and Sam travelled through during their journey to destroy the ring. It was the safest path to get them to Mordor according to their guide Gollum/Smeagol who lead them along the secret path across. It was a vast, wet and smelly marsh that covered the acient battle field before the black gate of Mordor where several battles were fought in the history of Middle Earth. It was a depressing place to traverse across since you could see the faces and feel the spirits of the dead creatures from the battles in the water of the marshes who draw you into the water if you look at them.
Edoras: It is the breathtaking city of the people of Rohan situated on a hill in a valley surrounded by a mountain range. It is an extremely windy city due to it's location but was well adapted by having it's houses and buldings close to each other and the Golden Hall of the King Theoden at the top of the city.
Fangorn Forest: It is the most ancient forest in middle earth and is the least travelled into by visitors due to it's earie feeling. It is a thick forest of large tangled trees and lots of moss and overgrown ground-covering plants. It is a very mystical forest that is the home to the shepards of the trees aka the Ents. It is where Pippin and Merry meet the Ent Treebeard during 'The Two Towers' and convince him to help them fight the evil in Middle Earth.
Helm's Deep: Built by the men of Rohan it was constructed as a safe hide-out for its people in time of war. Situated at the edge of a mountain range it has several walls to keep the enemies out and large caves inside the mountain to keep all the women and children hidden and safe! It comes into use during 'The Two Towers' and is the location for the first major battle between the army of 10,000 Uruk-hai that Saruman sent with the one purpose - to destroy the world of men.
Isenguard: Built in the second age by the men of Gondor as an extension to their kingdom it wasn't used by the third age until they allowed Saruman to reside there about 200 years before the fellowship began it's journey to destroy the ring. Once a place of beauty and nature but became a dark and evil factory when Saruman started breeding his army of Uruk-hai with help from the orcs sent o him by Sauron. The most recognizable object in Isenguard is the tower of Orthanc which stands 500 feet tall made out of indestructable black rock. Orthanc is capaple of withstanding attacks such as the war by the Ents that takes place in 'The Two Towers'.

To learn more about the history and stories about Middle Earth featured in the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy I highly recommend you read the following novels by Tolkien (if you haven't already)and in this order preferably:
'The Hobbit' which is quite an easy read since it's a children's novel. It gives the background on Bilbo Baggins and his adventure in which he found the 'one ring' and helps you understand things that occur in LOTR!
'The Lord Of The Rings' which are three books sold separately(same names as the movies) or in one book (like my mom's old copy I read). They give a wonderful elaborate description of Middle Earth and each character involved in the epic. Reading the book will give you a much greater understanding of the time spent during the journeys travelled and a lot more that isn't able to be shown in the movies!
'The Silmarillion' which is basically as I can best explain it to be like 'The Bible' in the way that it's a complex explanation of the history of Middle Earth from its creation and each race's birth and the wars fought over power. It's a much tougher read than the others but worth it for anyone who wants to understand what Middle Earth has been through and to find out why Elves and Dwarves dislike each other so much in LOTR. It overall makes you realize what a true genious J.R.R. Tolkien really was!
