Herbalism in the Faery-Faith

Deva’s can be defined as the spirit of an Herb. An Herb as defined by Paul Beyerl in his book "A Compendium of Herbal Magick" is:

"Any plant which produces chlorophyll is likely to be considered an herbe, whether it is an annual or perennial, whether it is a fern or a mighty tree. So long as we, in our limited human wisdom, have been able to recognize that plant’s medicinal or spiritual value, the word herbe applies."*

The study of Herbalism is a vast undertaking; with so much green life on the planet it takes many years to become adept at such practices. For most pagans the study or at least the interest in herbs begins with their use in spell work. Herbs however have a wide range of uses from culinary to medicinal, scientific, magickal, and spiritual. Of course the scientific knowledge we have about herbs is simply the magick that can be defined under the implementation of tools such as microscopes and other devices found in modern laboratories.

This particular study of herbs will deal specifically with the two sets or traditional Irish Herbs. The first set includes Ale Hoof, Elder, Eyebright, Foxglove, Groundsel, Hawthorn and Vervain. These herbs are to be gathered at night because the star that the Tuatha De Danaan came from governs them. They are considered to contain great power. The second set consists of Speedwell, Eyebright, St. Johns Wort, Mallow, Self-Heal, Vervain and Yarrow. The second set must be harvested on a bright day at noon, closest to the full of the moon.

The creation of all Herbs is detailed in Irish Mythology. The story is based on the brother Miach and his sister Airmed. Miach and Airmed were very close and had a special bond with each other. Upon Miach’s death, Airmed tended his grave and fell asleep upon it one day. Miach appeared to Airmed and told her that he would give her the gift of healing. When she awoke, she found his gravesite covered with all the herbs of the world. She was blessed with the knowledge of each of the Deva’s healing attributes and became the greatest healer of the Tuatha De Danaan.
