Oprah Winfrey produced this sensitive 2001 TV-adaptation of Elizabeth Strout's 1999 bestselling novel. Elisabeth Shue is heartbreaking as Isabelle, a repressed single mother who lives a lonely life in a mill town. Although determined to make a better life for teenage daughter Amy (Hanna Hall), Isabelle finds her efforts to win respect shattered by Amy's scandalous sexual secrets. But when Isabelle is faced with the possibility of losing her daughter, she confronts truths about her own secret past, and finds herself struggling to hold together the only family she has left.
