Set in the late 1930's, a newly married husband and wife anthropologist team travel to an island group in New Guinea to study the sexual mores of group of villagers. Their relationship begins to break down when the woman realises her husband is wrongly interpreting the research to further his own academic ambitions. She enlists the help of a pearl trader to travel to another island where she intends to research a village of head-hunters, and begins to fall in love with him. By the time she returns to her husband, war has broken out in the Pacific and the Japanese are poised to invade their island. ------Cinema Papers August edition
