A Strange Elf, Clad In Green And Brown...

OK, so details differ slightly depending on what you're referring to - the book or the film.  Since I've only read the book once, and that was a very long time ago...some time this past age...here will go, for the main part, the film interpretation - until such times that I have reread the entire trilogy.  Details that are not found within the film I have obviously looked up in the book.

Name

'Legolas' - Woodland Elf dialectal name, derived from the Sindarin 'Laegolas'; meaning 'green' {'laeg'}, and 'collection of leaves' or 'collection of foliage' {'golas'}.  The inclusion of the Sindarin 'las', meaning leaf singular, suggests the latter, and thus 'Laegolas' translates directly to the common tongue as 'green collection of leaves'.  Shortened, the translation becomes 'green leaves', and thus the name Legolas Greenleaf is given to the noble Prince of Mirkwood.

Events Concerning The Fellowship Of The Ring {A Brief History}

In the year 3018 {Third Age}, Legolas journeys to Rivendell, a messenger of his father King Thranduil of Northern Mirkwood, to sit on the Council of Elrond.  Here he pledges his bow and his allegiance to the Ring Bearer; his archery skills and heightened vision proving an invaluable asset to the Fellowship throughout their Quest.

Upon his arrival to Lothlorien, Legolas receives from the Lady Galadriel the bow of the Galadhrim, accompanied by a quiver of arrows.  During the Fellowship's stay in Lorien, Legolas and Gimli Son of Gloin form an unbreakable friendship, the strength of which was never rivaled, there or after.

Upon the breaking of the Fellowship, and the passing of Boromir at the the foot of Amon Hen, Legolas joins Aragorn and Gimli in a bid to rescue hobbits Pippin and Merry from the clutches of Saruman's Uruk-Hai.  During their search, the three encounter the Rohirrim, and take council with King Theoden of Rohan;  thus resulting in the Battle of Hornburg at Helm's Deep.

Legolas eventually travels to Gondor to partake in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields; here he also hears the call of the sea, and as forewarned by the words of Galadriel, did thereafter long desire to sail.

Events Following The Ending Of The 'War Of The Ring'

After the defeat of Saruman, Legolas travels with Gimli back through the Forests of Fangorn and the Glittering Caves.  Nothing else is known of their travels.

March 1st 1541 {Fourth Age} sees the death of King Elessar {Aragorn} in Gondor.  Legolas then built a gray ship, and fulfilled at last his desire to sail over sea, and it is said that with him went Gimli; the elf and the dwarf the last of the Nine Walkers.
