Table Topics Tips

By: Vijay Kallianpur,CTM

Remember these objectives of the Table Topics portion of the Toastmasters program.

bulletTo practice being the host of a section of the program
bulletTo give an opportunity for people to think quickly and speak eloquently given little warning on what they are to speak about
bulletTo give everyone a chance to speak, even if they don't have a major speaking role for this meeting.

Here are some tips for being Table Topics Master

bulletYour topics may all be along the lines of a theme, or they may be completely random questions.
bulletKeep topics simple. The topic should not be difficult to understand; it should be universal enough so that anyone can expound on the topic.
bulletMake a list of the people you will be calling upon to speak using the meeting’s agenda. This list should include (in the following order)
bulletMembers who do not have a speaking opportunity today
bulletMembers who have minor functionary roles (BC,WOTD,T,Ah,Gr)
bulletGuests
bulletMembers who have major functionary roles (TM, ME)
bulletEvaluators
bulletSpeakers
bulletIf you invite guests to speak, make it very clear that they have an option to pass the question.
