Vegeta's relationships - hatred, love, hostility

Throughout the whole Dragonball Z and Dragonball GT series as well as in the manga, Vegeta has gone through a lot of things. Since he isn't as simple-minded as Goku and his friends, he didn't simply gather "friends" around himself. He has just a few people he cares about. And not only those I want to introduce here.

Son Goku aka Kakarott

When they first meet, Vegeta considers Goku just a third class warrior, who isn't really worth the time. Indifference turns quickly into hostility when Goku and his son defeat Vegeta and force him to return to Freezer to recover. The defeat hurts Vegeta's pride deeply and he plans to return to earth and kill Goku and his son.

After the Freezer saga, when Goku turned into a Super-saiyajin for the first time, Vegeta develops a deep hatred for the other saiyajin, who seems to be constantly surpassing him and therefore hurting his pride. Vegeta's life has a new goal, which is to surpass and kill Son Goku once and for all.

This kind of rivalry goes on between the two saiyajin during the whole DBZ series, and during the Majin Boo saga, there is one final, spectacular duel between Son Goku and Vegeta. The prince allows Babidee to control his mind just to have this fight.

When they both saved earth together, something changes. When Vegeta gets himself in danger, Goku says: "You know what happens if you die again. So don't die, ...friend." Vegeta keeps seeing Goku as a rival, but finally he can give up his hatred and even become something like friends with the other saiyajin. But it took a damn long time for him to get to that point.

 

 

Bulma

Well, this is really hard to describe, especially there are only vague explanations in the manga. Fact is, Bulma and Vegeta have a relationship, and they have two kids together, Trunks and Bra.

In the manga, when mirai no Trunks explained who his parents were, he described their relationship like that: "Well, my mother broke up with Yamcha, and my dad was just around, so she made out with him. Without marriage or anything." People might interpret that as a one-night-stand, but the existance of an other child that was born years later is the best evidence that it wasn't one. And in later episodes Vegeta shows his feelings for Bulma clearly (just remember the events during the Majin Boo saga).

In fact, Vegeta loves Bulma, althought he doesn't really show it. In the Majin Boo saga, Goku just needs to mention that Bulma was in danger, or that Bulma had been eaten by Boo, and Vegeta is enraged. He even confesses it himself, he admitts that he has someone to fight for, which is no one else but Bulma and Trunks. He even sacrifices his life to protect his family.

I'd really give a lot to know how Bulma and Vegeta actually got together. Must've been really interesting.

Trunks.

Vegeta's son. He was born while Vegeta was still in a period of change, unsure of where he belonged and who he was loyal to. Therefore, he and his son have a difficult relationship. Vegeta hugs Trunks only once, and that is shortly before he sacrifices his life to save his family. There is no doubt that Vegeta loves Trunks, but he can't show it very well.

Other than Bra, Trunks is a lot like his father. Not only does he have his father's evil gllare, he is also very powerful, maybe even more so than his father. Trunks is very proud of his 'Papa' and would defend him any time.

And through Trunks, Vegeta can achieve things he always wanted to achieve. It was Mirai no Trunks after all, who killed Freezer. It was Vegeta's son who took revenge for the blown up planet. And chibi Trunks beat Goku's son Goten at the big tournament, while his father was never able to win against Goku.

Bra.

Even though Bra is so much like her mother, not only referring to looks, but also to (low) powers, she is Vegeta's princess. Toward her he cannot be mean or uncaring, instead he grants her every wish she has.

I don't think that Vegeta loves Bra more than Trunks. It's just easier for him to show his feelings for her, and she was born after he got rid of the awful urge to fight - and beat - Kakarott. She was born into a time where Vegeta had finally decided which side he belonged to. And where he had changed somewhat. Bra is a bit spoiled.
