On June 7-9, 1998, 270 journalists
and representatives from various faith communities met at the Carleton
University School of Journalism in Ottawa, Ontario for the Faith and the
Media conference. The purpose of the conference, which was sponsored by
35 faith groups and media organizations, was to see how faith groups and
the media can work together to improve faith coverage in Canada. This web
site about the coverage of faith by Canadian media is a legacy of
the conference.
Sponsors of Faith and the Media included the Canadian Association of Journalists and the Carleton University School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Special thanks goes to the Multiculturalism Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. Other sponsors included media outlets such as the Globe and Mail, Winnipeg Free Press, Ottawa Citizen and a broad range of faith groups including the United Church of Canada, Islamic Society of North America and Canadian Jewish Congress (Manitoba Region). For more information, please see our complete list of sponsors. You may wish to view the summary of the conference, transcripts of some conference addresses, as well as media reports. |
