The Al Dakhiliyah province lies to the west of the Hajar Mountains. Previously called the AlJauf this area forms the geographical core of Oman. It stretches from Bahla in the northwest via the Jebel Akhdar Mountains to Izki and further south to well beyond Adam. Also part of this province is the Sumail gap from lzki to Fanja, the principal travel route from the interior to coastal Oman. Al Dakhiliyah has played a dominant role throughout the history of Oman. The principal town of Dakhiliyah, both in the past and today, is Nizwa which at various times in its history has been the capital of the Imamate of Oman. |
