Fake was first released translated into English in May of 2003 through Tokyopop. Each book is priced $9.99 and up, and range around 200 pages long on good quality paper and a sound binding (unlike Tokyopop's earlier releases which fell apart in a matter of days). The manga remains unflipped and reads from right to left as the original Japanese manga did. Overall, Tokyopop is doing a good job, although I have a few complaints about the translated version. First- several cases in which they added in text where there was none in the original. Second- too much slang language- "dude"s and "man" s and "bro"s do not enhance the dialogue. Third- Ryo's way of talking sounds waaay to insecure and shallow. Whatever happened to the sweet, smiling, polite, overflowingly kind Ryo of old? Mistranslation alters character. -_-# Fourth- for some reason, the quality of the printing seemed to be much lower and chunkier than the original. I can understand the fact that the USA doesn't have an entire industry centered around manga, but it shouldn't be too difficult to put a little extra money into the quality of the ink detail. It would be noticed- I can guarantee that. The difference between the original Japanese printing and the American translation is so drastic that the latter looks like a counterfeit.
