Potentisation in Homeopathic Medicine

It is a process by which there is quantitative reduction in drug substance but a qualitative increase in its medicinal or therapeutic  property, which was inert in its crude states. The above process is mathematico-mechanical where the inert substance has changed into a state of physical solubility and physiological assimilability.

Methd of Potentisation

In the preparation of homeopathic potencies of liquid, drug substances, three scales are used i.e. i)   Decimal ( x)  ii) Centesimal ( c)  iii) 50 Millesimal ( o)

Centesimal Scale

The centesimal scale is based on the principle that the first potency should contain one hundredth part of original drug and each succeeding potency should contain one hundred the part of the potency preceding it.

This method is introduced by Dr Samuel Hahnemann (the founder of homeopathy). The potency in this scale is denoted by suffixing 'c' to the number indicating  the potency. In practice it may also be denoted by simple numerical also.

Take phial preferably of then milliliters or bigger size, perfectly clean and new. Fit a new good cork into it. Mark the name of the drug with (1) on the cork. Check the name of the mother tincture (Q) to be potentised. Remove the cork from the phial. Pour the exact proportion ( 1/100) of the mother tincture of the drug and then add the dispensing alcohol. taking care that one third of the phial remaining empty for succussion.  Fit the cork marked '1' again in the phial, grasp the phial in the right hand with the thumb held firmly over the cork and strike it with ten powerful downward strokes of the arm or by striking the closed right hand against the open palm of the left hand or by an elastic body or by suitable mechanical potentiser, letting each stroke terminate in a jerk. The first dilution is now ready. Make the name of the drug with suffix (1) on the phial.

The same  process goes on until we reach 30th potency and so on.

Decimal Scale

This potency has been introduced by Dr C.Hering of USA who dilute homeopathic drugs into potencies by using one part of drug into 9 part of alcohol or water and succuss 10 time to become  1x potency, each succeeding potency should contain one part of the potency proceeding it. The potency in this scale is denoted by suffixing letter 'x' to the number indicating the potency.  Most of this potencies are being used in Bio-Chemic remedies such as Calc.Sulphurica 3x, Calc.Fluorica 6x, Calc Phoshorica 12x, etc.

Fifty Millesimal Potency

The fifty millesimal potency is based on the principle enunciated by Hahnemann in the Organon Of Medicine 6th Edistion.  100 globules weighing sixty five mg  ( one grain ) and such 500 globules can hardly absorb one drop fro their saturation.  So the proportion of medicaine to alcoho; will be  1 to 50,000 ( 1/500 x 100 ). So this scale of potency goes by the name of fifty millesimal potency.

This potency is not popular among Homeopath throughout the world. But few followers of this potency are still practicing in India, headed by Dr Patel.
