Episode 1 - Pilot
As the pilot episode opens,
we are introduced to mobster Santino "Sonny Boy" Napoli and his crew Jimmy "Suits" Urizzi, Albert "Lucky" Fema, and Joe Falcone. Sonny and his crew are soldiers in the Volonte crime family, and we learn early on that Joe Falcone is really Joe Pistone, a special agent with the FBI whose assignment is to infiltrate the Volonte family and bring it down. Carlo Volonte is the boss of the family, but greed has got the best of him and it is discovered that he's been stealing from family profits. Needless to say, Carlo will not be a recurring character.
Joe Falcone must keep secret not only his true identity of Joe Pistone, but also his family:
his wife, Maggie, younger daughter Jess, and
older daughter Amanda.
Amanda is very close with her father,
but often "acts out" at school, getting into fights with her classmates. Raymond "The Madman" Ricci
is the family's underboss.
He is currently an inmate at Ryker's Prison psychiatric ward awaiting trial for the murder of his wife.
Raymond calls a meeting with Sonny and his rival Victor Mura.
Sonny and Victor hate each other
and it's clear from this meeting that this rivalry will escalate
into a war between the two. Victor "The Pick" Mura
is a ruthless killer and will stop at nothing to take over Sonny's operation,
including trying to recruit Sonny's men.
Joe has to decide whether to side with Victor or Sonny.
When Victor, who's a bully, starts picking on Nicky the Kid
Sonny comes to his rescue,
and Joe realizes who he'll back.
Joe's wife Maggie is involved in a serious car accident
and Joe gets a call to come to the hospital.
But he's not allowed to leave the Motion Lounge because he is challenged by Jimmy.
Joe has to spend a tense afternoon at the bar waiting for his informant to vouch for him.
The call comes in and Joe Falcone is cleared,
but Joe is not going to let Jimmy get away with challenging him.
He stands up to Jimmy and earns more respect from Sonny.
Joe finally gets to leave to visit Maggie in the hospital.
The next day at the christening of Nicky's baby, Sonny finds out that he's lost three of his men.
Once again, Jimmy challenges Joe's loyalty,
but this time Lucky sticks up for him. Then, in front of his family and friends,
Nicky is arrested by the D.A.
Joe, who is at home taking care of the kids while Maggie is in the hospital recuperating, gets a visit from Jules, his FBI boss, who
shows Joe surveillance photos of Victor and a member of the Russian mob.
Joe brings this photo to Sonny
thereby strengthening their friendship. Sonny meets with Raymond the next morning
to show him the photo of Victor and the Russian.
Raymond is now showing signs that the stress of being in prison is beginning to drive him even more crazy,
but Sonny remains loyal to his friend. Meanwhile, Sonny has ordered Joe to kill Nicky thinking that Nicky has talked to the D.A.
But instead, Joe warns Nicky about the hit, and gives him money to get out of town. Joe drives Sonny to a meeting with Victor and Rechenko, the Russian mobster -- a meeting set up by Raymond.
When Victor starts saying things against Raymond, Sonny cuts the meeting short, and Victor orders Rechenko to kill Sonny.
What Victor doesn't realize until it's too late is that Raymond has already made a deal with the Russians to kill Victor. As the Russians leave the meeting,
Sonny and Joe watch
as Lucky kills the Russians.
While the hits on Victor and the Russians take place,
Jimmy goes looking for Nicky the Kid, but doesn't find him --
or does he? Later Sonny gets the word that, as expected, Raymond has been named as the new boss
and Sonny has been "upped" to captain. Sonny tells Joe in front of Jimmy and Lucky that if Joe hadn't come up with that photo,
none of this would have taken place. Joe watches as Nicky's pigeons fly the coop and realizes that Nicky never took his advice.
