A little about me and my experience with HeroQuest
My name is Falk. Sometime in the early 90s I met these two kids my age
that lived on the other side of my block. Their names are Steve and
Asher. They were the crazy kids in the neighborhood and they influenced
me as young boys do when they hang out together all of the time. Both
of them piqued my interest in a few things. One of the things that we
did all the time (besides shoot out patio windows with a slingshot and
get police records at the age of 12) was read a lot of Tolken and other
fantasy authors and watch whatever medieval movies that we could get
our hands on. Shortly before Christmas one year, Asher got a copy of a
board game called Hero Quest that was a collaborative effort between
Milton Bradley and Games Workshop. Being the self-proclaimed leader of
our little band of friends, Asher organized several gaming sessions. We
didn't know how to play the game properly but we had a lot of fun. That
Christmas, I was given a copy of Hero Quest and it was then when I
discovered the possibilities and began to not only create my own quests
using a photocopy of the board and tiles in the back of the quest book
that I laminated and "sticky-tacked" but I also began to create new
characters to play, and new weapons. I had the opportunity to not only
play-test these new creations of mine on Asher, Steve et. al. but I
also could play the game with a number of my younger cousins and
brothers. The next year, Asher got DragonStrike by TSR of AD&D
acclaim. We tried to play that game but found it too confusing, boring,
and short. Santa got me that game for Christmas too. I attempted to
create some sort of conversion for the spells and monsters in the
DragonStrike set. At 13, I had a hard time figuring this out and became
pretty frustrated with the whole game and I put it up in my closet. It
sat in my closet until my sophomore year of high school 2 years later
when I sought to "put away childish things."
Fast Foreword to 2002
"I am now 22 and in a fraternity. Over Thanksgiving break
(ours is
particularly long) I went out to the shed in my parents' back yard to
get a set of Yaffa Blocks that I had stored back there a year prior and
I noticed that Hero Quest was sitting back there. I knew that there
were a couple of ex-gamers in my fraternity and a few random guys who
liked to play Halo on the Xbox and the varied assortment of drinking
games that can be found on many college campuses throughout the
country. When I showed up with my game, I was surprised to find that
many of my brothers saw the game and made remarks like "Holy S--- Falk!
I haven't seen that game in years!" I ran the first quest in the book
that night and had to turn people down because the table couldn't fit
that many people around it. (we were using a 6' folding table mind
you). I was able to run the campaign with about 7 player characters
(using copies of the 4 base heroes and miniatures from DragonStrike)
Since that first night (as of the time of this page) I have run quests
on eight separate occasions and averaged about 2 quests a night with no
less than 4 heroes and no more than 8 heroes each night. I have also
bought a set of paints and have painted all of the Chaos Warriors and
the Chaos Warlock. More significantly, I have used my pretty decent
creative writing skills (from being a former History major) and created
a few related quests and a pretty decent system for spells that allows
for consistent expansion."
A Little About this Page
For the sake of simplicity, I don't plan on using very many
pictures
on the pages themselves. You will be able to download the images but I
don't want to slow this page down with large .jpg files floating around
that do little except distract the reader from the actual content of
the pages. As I create new things I will post them when I get time to
post them. I'm not into creating systems for popular TV shows, books,
or other game systems. If you suggest that I create stats for Harry
Potter, so help me... I will slap you silly. I am tossing around the
idea of creating a set of quests set in Middle Earth. I'm sure that if
you look around on the internet, you will be able to find millions of
variations of stats for hobbits and other Halflings so if you really
want to run a quest in the world of Tolken, you should have no problem.
If you have an interesting villain that you have created or a quest
that you made that you think is really good, please send it to me. Send
me the quest in .jpg format (please keep it under 20k) send me any
characters within the body of the email, make sure to include a brief
description. The more rounded out the character, the better. If a
character has a few quirks then these can be exploited and can make
quests more interesting.
I encourage all suggestions about this page and any criticisms
you
have will be regarded as welcome suggestions. If this page starts to
get more popular that I can deal with (which I do not anticipate) then
I may not be able to keep up with all suggestions and ideas.
Update (9-22-03):
It's been about 8 months or so since I first worked on my
storylines here but I just finished adding a considerable amount. I
just added the "names" page which is used to show the relationships in
the storylines that I have established in these pages. There is no main
link for it but it's referenced just about everywhere on the page so
you'll have no problem finding it. I went into greater detail on that
page, added a few new characters, better described older ones, and even
added my advancement instructions for the Psionicists. In other news, I
graduated and am now teaching computer classes at the same high school
that I attended, St. Edward
High School.
I'm teaching Applications (mostly MSOffice) and a course that consists
mostly of Typing. Because of this, I have a hell of a lot of spare time
on my hands to surf the web and write.
I'm still always open to suggestions so if you have any...drop
me a line.
