“I’m sorry, but we can’t be together anymore.” Kevin said painfully, even a fool could tell that he’s lying.
“Why? Was it something I did?” Jessica looked up to him couldn’t believe that he was actually saying this.
“No, look, it’s not you...”
“It’s me?” Jessica finished his sentence for him, continued to stare into Kevin’s green eyes.
“No, it’s not us. It’s...fate.”
“Fate?” Jessica’s blues eyes were filled with confusion.
“Let’s just say that fate played a cruel joke on us.” With that, Kevin turned and walked out the room. Hearing Jessica’s sobs behind him, Kevin slowed down. Jessica was his life, in fact, she still is. Leaving her was like ripping a part of himself out. But after a few seconds of hesitation, Kevin shook his head as he headed out the door.
Sitting in his car, Kevin lay his head down at the steering wheel. When Kevin closed his eyes, images of Jessica flashed before him. The day they met, the way she nodded her head shyly, the way she threw her short brownish hair back and of course, the smile that melted his heart. Kevin lifted up his head while trying to hold back the tears in his eyes, the scene that changed his life and shattered his dreams replayed before his eyes once again. Making his heartaches...
“Okay, my mom’s out of town, so you’re going to meet my dad. Don’t do that!” Kevin smiled and winked at his fiancée, Jessica, as she fixed his tie.
“It’s not big deal!” Kevin shrugged carelessly.
“No, my dad is very strict about things like that.” Jessica warned.
“Okay, okay. I’ll behave. You know I’d do anything to be with you.” Kevin circled his arms around her slim waist and lowered his lips onto hers. His kiss was gentle as if he didn’t want to hurt her in any ways. His hand was supporting Jessica’s back while she ran her fingers through his spiked black hair. Their kiss deepened as the time pass by.
“Ahem!” the cough from the door startled them.
“Dad!” Jessica said as she pulled away from Kevin.
“Jessi, will you give us a minute to talk? Alone?” Knowing her dad, Jessica nodded and gave Kevin a supportive glance then exited the room.
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Kurt. I’m Kevin.” Kevin held out his hand nervously.
“I know, you’re all Jessica ever talk about.” Mr. Kurt replied blankly, didn't bother to move. Withdrawing his hand, sweats began to form at Kevin’s forehead. “Glad to know that.”
“Sit, young man. And tell me about your family.” Mr. Green patted the spot next to him on the couch.
“Well, I was born in Kentucky, and I never get to know my father, he left when I was three. My mom brought mw up all by herself.” Kevin started uncomfortably. “Wait, here’s a picture of my dad. It was taken before he left.” Kevin paused as he took out his wallet and pulled out an old, torn photo. “This is my dad.” He pointed to the man that’s holding the baby. What Kevin didn’t see was the stunned look on Mr. Kurt’s face. It was a terrified look as if he had just seen a ghost.
“What was your mother’s name? Was it Emily?” Mr. Kurt asked shakily after a while of awkward silence.
“Yeah, it is. Do you know my mother?”
“And you have a scar on the back of your head because your dad dropped you when you were only ten months old. Your parents had to rush you off to the hospital, and they were out of your blood type since you’re AB negative and it’s a rare blood type. But thank goodness that one of the nurse is AB negative, she saved your life. Am I right?” Ignoring Kevin’s question, Mr. Kurt asked another.
“Yes. How did you know?” Kevin could feel a feeling of uncertainty creeping into his thoughts, a feeling that he didn’t like at all.
“Because I am you father, Kevin. Your mom and me got married too early. We thought whatever we felt was love, but it was just a rebellious act. Our marriage only lasted for three years; we were having trouble communicating. Sooner or later, we came to a conclusion-we spilt up.” Mr. Kurt looked up to Kevin, trying to find forgiveness in his eyes, even just the smallest amount.
“And then you met your wife and had Jessica.” Kevin chuckled dryly.
There’s like a big bump in his throat, gagging him. “How do I know that you’re not lying? It can be some lies that you made up because you think I’m not good enough for your daughter!”
“You know it is true, Kevin. I can see it in your eyes. You are my son after all.” Mr. Kurt patted Kevin on the shoulder. Hoping that will knock some sense into him, make him accept the truth.
Kevin didn’t say a thing. He bit his bottom lip until he can taste blood - the same blood that ran in Jessica’s body. But the pain didn’t matter now, the only one he loved, the light that shone upon him when he was in the worst shape of his life had became a part of his family. Meaning that he won’t be able to hold her in his arms, kiss her or marry her. “I have to go.” Kevin said through gritted teeth as he came out of the daze.
“Don’t worry. I know what I have to do. I would rather to let her hate me than hate you. She need a family to be there for her.” As soon as he finished the sentence, Kevin left the room. Staring at Kevin’s fading figure. Mr. Kurt buried his head in his hands as he let out a muffled, angry cry...
Opening his eyes, Kevin felt something wet on his face. “I cried.” He thought while wiping the tears off his face. Taking one last look at the house stood in front of him. He came here with hope and happiness in his heart, now all he had left was sorrow and a meaningless life. He took out a picture of him and Jessica. Tracing her facial figure with his fingertip. In the photo, their smiles were so trouble free. But that was then, this is now. Stepping on the accelerator, Kevin let go of the photo as it flew into the sky. He sped off into the darkness of the night, pretty much like how he felt right now. “Good bye, Jessica, my love, and my sister.”
