Looking out the dirty, old window from the hospital, seeing the kids jumping, running and laughing outside on the streets Jennifer sighed knowing that she doesn't have much time left as her mom steps in the room.
"Are we going home now?" Jennifer asked hopefully, she's been in the hospital for 3 years of leukemia. The chemicals had kept her alive, but it's not helping anymore, she reached the last stage of leukemia, according to the doctors, she's only got 3 months left.
"No, I'm sorry, honey, you'll have to stay here for another week" her mom said, not able to tell her that she might never leave the hospital.
"Why? The doctors told me that I'm fine, and I can go home today" Jennifer said in a perky voice which made her sound like a baby. She knew that she was dying and she also knows that her parents is trying to hide it from her, but she could sense it somehow.
"I'm sorry, but they just need to run some more tests before you leave, and the test result won't come out in a week" her mom said walking out the room, unable to stop herself from crying. "Oh, and I do have good news, one of the Backstreet Boys is coming over sometime this weekend, to visit some patients."
"You mean the patients that's dying" Jennifer said, the tone in her voice proves that she's not afraid of dying at all. Jennifer's mom's mouth dropped. 'She's not suppose to know that,' she thought. "No, honey, he's here to visit all patients!" her mom insisted.
"It's okay, mom, I can handle it" Jennifer said standing up, trying to prove that she's strong enough to fight back death. But a terrible headache made her fall back in bed.
"You okay honey?" her mom hurried to her side.
"Mom..." Jennifer turned for a supportive hug from her mother, feeling tears rolling down her face...
"Man, this place is creepy!" Alex complained as he rubs his arms.
"This is Jennifer Howards" the nurse whispered as Alex enters the room.
"Hello?" he said, this was not what he was expecting, there should be a girl welcoming him. He walks over to the bed, finding Jennifer sleeping peacefully. "Wow!" he sighed, her long eyelashes, her shiny blonde hair, and her soft skin. Alex stood there in amazement; she's like an angel! As if Jennifer feels that someone is staring at her, she opened her eyes. Her eyes met a pair of big, friendly, brown eyes, her eyes widen with surprise, and she has never seen such beautiful eyes before in her life. On the other hand, Alex's shocked to find that not only did this girl have the most gorgeous gray-green eyes he's ever seen, but he has a feeling that they've met before, a long, long time ago, maybe not in this lifetime.
"Hi" Jennifer finally said.
"Hi, how you doing? I'm Alex!" Alex reaches out his hand.
"Jennifer" she said as she shook his hand. His hand is so big and warm.
"Nice to meet you, Jennifer!" Alex said, knowing that this girl is going to be an important part of his life. "Do you want to go for a walk?" Alex asked.
"I would love to." Jennifer smiled, she told the doctors not to tell the visitors her condition since she doesn't want anyone to pity her. She starts to get up, but her knees are weak, she falls right into Alex's arms.
"Sorry." Jennifer smiled shyly, and somehow, she feels safe in his arms, she feels she's being protected, even if the sky crushed down, Alex would be there to stop it.
"Am I dreaming?" Alex thought, but the soft, warm body in his arms, the streaks of hair that brushes against his face, proves that it is real!
"You okay?" Alex asked, their gaze met again.
"Yeah, I'm fine" Jennifer lied, feeling that she has no strength in her entire body. Alex held her in his arms, don't want to let her go, little did he know, Jennifer was thinking the same thing...
Two months passed by, Alex and Jennifer sits at a bench near the sidewalk of the hospital. Jennifer has been doing treatments, she wants to live, she wants to see things, do things, and she doesn't want to leave Alex. She hasn't been able to tell Alex her condition, she knows it's wrong keeping the biggest secret from him. But every time she tries to tell him, he always look at her with those faithful brown eyes of his which made her drown in them and forget what she's going to say.
"Jen?" Alex asked, taking out a small blue box, he opens, it's a white gold ring with small diamonds in the shape of a heart.
"Tell me this is NOT what I think this is" Jennifer said, getting up.
"Jennifer, marry me!"
"No, no, I can't, I'm sorry Alex." Jennifer heads back to her room.
"Please, at least tell me why?" Alex begged, grabbed her hand.
"I...I've only got one month left" Jennifer said, looking at the ground, not able to look at him.
"So?" Alex's response surprised her.
"So? I'm dying!" Jennifer said, shaking Alex, try to make him realize what's going on.
"Jen, honey, even if you've only got one minute to live, I would still ask you to be my wife, to me, one second with you can be forever, and we've still got a month left!" Alex said sincerely, taking her into his arms kissed her on the forehead.
"Alex..."
"Shh." Alex puts a finger over her lips, while putting the ring on her finger. "Please say yes" Alex pleads.
"Yes..." Jennifer, said, tears rolling down her cheek.
"I love you" Alex whispered, kissing the tears off her face.
"Alex, are you asleep?" Jennifer asked, they're lying on a hammock, Jennifer's lying on Alex's stomach with his arm around her shoulder.
"Yes, I am" Alex answered, opening his eyes. "What's wrong? Sweetie?" Alex asked, worried, Jennifer's face was pale.
"I...I feel dizzy..." Alex lay her down on as fast as possible but gentle. He dialed 911.
"Alex?" Jennifer whispered Alex hurried to her side. "I love you."
Those were the last words she ever spoken.
After a while, Jennifer's lying in a hospital bed and Alex's sitting in a chair outside the room.
"Is she okay?" Alex asked eagerly as the doctor exited the room.
"I'm sorry, she lost her consciousness."
"No" Alex whispered, can't believe it's actually happening, he knows her condition and her time's almost up, but he still believed that she deserves to live longer, she never done any harm to anyone in her life, she's the sweetest person he had ever known. He falls back in the chair, before he knew it, he was singing...
'I've got this feeling that you're not gonna stay
It's burning deep within me
The fear of losing of slipping away
It just keeps getting closer, baby
Whatever reason to leave what I've had
My place is always beside you
And I, wish that I didn't need you so bad
Your face, just won't go away
Don't wanna lose to loneliness,
Girl I know we can win
Don't wanna lose to emptiness
Oh, no, or ever again.
Don't wanna lose you now, baby
I know we can win this
Don't wanna lose you now, no, no
Or ever again…'
As he sings, his mind flew back to the first time he met her. Her lovely gray-green eyes, the way she said 'hi' shyly, when they first went on a date in the park. He can't forget the time when he forced her to eat an apple for her health, their first kiss, the smile on her face when she tried on the wedding dress, their wedding...
A few days passed, in those days, Alex never left Jennifer's side, he didn't eat nor sleep. One night, Alex falls asleep without knowing, little did he know, Jennifer's eyes opened. The next morning, he woke up, finding himself on a bed next to Jennifer, he pulled open the curtain the separate bed to bed, but to his surprise, the bed was made and Jennifer was gone.
"No....." Alex whispered, knowing what must've happen.
"Sir?" the nurse asked.
"Yeah?"
"Your wife, she left a note and this." The nurse hands Alex an envelope and the box that holds the wedding ring.
"Thanks" Alex said as he opens the envelope...
Alex,
When you're reading this, I'm probably gone, don't be sad, think about it as if I went to another world, a world of eternal happiness. Thank you for being in my life, when I first found out that I'm dying, I've cursed the fate, I was so young, I wanted to see the world! But then I met you, you showed me the world, you're there for me, I love you, Alex. I don't know how to say this, but I died without regrets, the only regret that I might have is that I have to leave you, Alex please take care of yourself, at least for me. I wish that I could spend more time with you, but I guess not. Once again, Alex, thank you, thanks for giving me a chance to experience life and love. I'll never forget the day you proposed to me and when you said that one second with me could mean forever, it was the sweetest thing I've ever heard! I want to tell you that I feel exactly the same way. I woke up last night, seeing you asleep so peacefully, I didn't have the heart to wake you. Please take care of yourself for me. Bye now, my love...
Love Always
Jen
Tears starts to form at the corner of Alex's eyes, he opens the box, takes out the wedding ring, as he hold it up against the light, his eyes caught something inside the ring. "What is this?" Alex looked at it again, carefully. It has 'Love Always' engraved inside. Alex stood there, reading the letter over and over again, he doesn't know how much time passed.
"Hey, you okay?" It was Brian, one of his best friends. Alex nodded, slowly he turns and walks out the room.
"What should we do? He's been like that for weeks!" Brian whispered to his cousin, Kevin, they're peeping at Alex though the crack of the door.
"I don't know. Let's go talk to him, I guess." Kevin shrugged.
"You okay? Everyone's real worry about you." Brian takes a seat next to Alex on the bench. Alex didn't respond his expression is blank.
"You promised Jennifer that you would take care of yourself! Is this what you call taking care of yourself?" Kevin starts to shake Alex back and forth, as if he's trying to shake some sense into him.
"I know that. It's just so hard to lose her, she's so young and…" Alex's voice trailed off as he let out a muffled sob.
"Alex, it's time to let go." Brian put the letter and the ring in Alex's hand, pushing the hand close, letting Alex hold it. Looking down at the things in his hand, Alex takes off his white gold chain around his neck and put the wedding ring on it as he folds the letter carefully and puts it in his pocket.
"Yeah, I guess so, it's time to let go..."
