Chapter Nineteen

Nicholas and Lilyanna were sipping tea in the chamber. Nicholas had came by just a few moments after Elizabeth was called Alexander’s chamber. He was dressed in a pair of black pants and a white shirt with a black silk vest while Lilyanna was wearing the light green gown that the maids made last night.

“Sometimes I wish none of this had ever happened, the baby-switching, nothing. Then you wouldn’t have to go through all this pain.” Nicholas sighed as he rubbed his temples.

“Well, I’m glad that it did happened. If mother didn’t switch us, how would we ever meet? I would be this princess that’s locked deep in the castle and you would be a farmer’s son. Even if I can turn back time, I would still want to be the farmer’s daughter instead of the princess, the chance to meet you and to be with you is more important than anything the palace could offer me. So if someone asked me if I would go through all these pain again just to meet you, I would answer ‘yes’.”

“So would I, so would I.” Nicholas raised her chin with his fingers and leaned in for an affectionate kiss.

The kiss was interrupted, however, when Elizabeth came in the door and announced the back news.

“Executed? Tomorrow?” Lilyanna cried in surprise as her eyes were soon filled with tears.

“I’m afraid so.” Elizabeth nodded.

“Why?”

“It’s the only way.” Elizabeth said, silently agreeing with Alexander’s logic.

“No....” Lilyanna gasped. “One more day isn’t enough. It will never be enough.”

“It’s okay.” Nicholas spoke. Getting shocked stares from the two women. “I wasn’t suppose to be here in the first place. At least let me do something to return the love I received from you over the years.”

“Don’t say that! It’s my entire fault! If I hadn’t rewrite your life.” Elizabeth cried.

“Don’t be sorry. We are both glad that you did what you do. It brought us together. If we can start over, we would still choose the way things are right now.” Nicholas replied and Lilyanna murmured in agreement. “Take care of Lilyanna for me.”

“I will.” Elizabeth answered.

This moment came to a halt when castle guards burst in the door. “We are to take Prince... Nicholas to the dungeon immediately.”

“Good-bye.” Nicholas kissed Lilyanna once more as he left the room with dignity and Lilyanna collapsed into Elizabeth’s arms with a cry.

“Here you go. Your highness.” The guard said as he held open the cell door for Nicholas, the servants and guards hadn’t gotten use to the new situation.

“Thanks.” Nicholas sat down on the soft straws on the ground. Burying his face in his hands, Nicholas finally let out the sobs he had been holding back. His shoulders shook violently as waves of anguish swept over his body.
