In my psychology of women and gender class my professor gave us a list that said Who Am I? at the top.
And I had walked into class late so I had to do it in just a few seconds. And I guess the purpose of the exercise was to show us that we define ourselves in certain ways, such as group memberships, roles, personality, etc. And so many of the girls in my class listed things like "sister, woman, friend" and I didn't list any of that stuff.
This is what I wrote:
1. a writer
2. quiet
3. misunderstood
4. quirky
5. sensitive
6. determined
7. worried
8. independent
9. thoughtful
10. excited
11. enthusiastic
12. understanding
and that's all I had time to get down. The whole exercise really perplexed me.
I guess it's because I ask myself that question a lot and never have any answers. But when it comes down to just me, asking myself who I am, I don't bother with stuff like "daughter, woman, and sister," even though I am all those things and love being them.
