The American CPSC (consumer product safety commision) did some investigation of the hazards of placing babies in adult beds.
According to their study, the main hazard patterns are:

  1. Suffocation associated with the co-sleeping of adult and baby.

  2. Suffocation where an infant becomes entrapped or wedged between the mattress another object.

  3. Suffocation due to airway obstruction when the baby is face down on a waterbed and mattress.

  4. Strangulation in rails or openings on beds that allow a baby's body to pass through while entrapping the head.


Their conclusion (a warning against placing babies in adult beds) is controversial (to say the least), but this research does point to some safety measures that should be taken.
