Pennsylvania
Amish Country

Brrrr!!!!! We woke up this morning to a blanket of frost covering the autumnal fields...leaves are
swirling along the pavement pelting our windshield...houses and farms are sporting pumpkins, ghosts,
scarecrows and mum bouquets...our water line was frozen this morning...the rolling farmlands are
punctuated by the white silos and barns of the Amish homesteads...the Pennsylvania Dutch Country is
as beautiful as they say. The contrast between these immaculate fields that blanket the loping hills
and the frenzy of New York City is what makes travel so stimulating.
Bird-In-Hand Market

We went to the weekly market at Ephrata where we got a good sampling of Pennsylvania Dutch
produce...the boys stuffed themselves on apple turnovers, we had fresh carmel corn, bought unusual
Hickory/Apple smoked salami, and delighted in the colorful displays of fresh vegetables hawked by
Amish and Mennonite families. I'd love to get my hands on a copy of Witness with Harrison Ford...
I'll look for it as we travel along.
Trick Or Treat At The Red Run Campground

William Penn's father was an Admiral in the King's Navy. The King owed him money for a service
that he performed. Before his father could collect he died. His son, William, inherited the money
that was owed. The King offered Penn land in the New World as payment for the debt. Penn had been
jailed for being a Quaker and the King was glad to be rid of him.
Penn had a vision that he would go to Penn Woods and set up a colony where all the different could
be practiced in the same city. He insisted that main buildings be built out of stone so the fire
would not spread. He named it White Cove and then he changed the name to Philadelphia...the city
of Brotherly Love.Over a thousand Quakers followed him and Philadelphia became the largest city
in the New World.
