"Ok, now we've been freaking abducted by aliens!"
Dawson gave his old friend Pacey a 'watch it' look. Then he moved closer to him.
"Quiet," he whispered. "If that is true, do you want them to know that we know?"
Pacey quieted down, and sat back in his chair. Before Pacey's outburst, Lily had left the table after seeing some friends of hers enter the Crashdown.
"What do you mean 'if that is true', dude?" Pacey asked him. "Your baby sister's as old as you. And might I add that she's extremely hot."
"PACEY?!" Dawson exclaimed, an angry expression entering his voice.
"Hey," Pacey defends himself. "Don't forget, you dated my sister. You can't really argue this point with me."
"That was different" Dawson argued. "What do you think caused this age increase?"
"Pod people?" Drue suggested.
"Well, if Leonard Nemoy comes through that door, we'll know for sure," Jen commented sarcastically.
"Will you guys knock it off," Dawson ordered them. "I think it's safe to say that whatever is going on here isn't ordinary. Actually, its extraordinary."
"Extra-Terrestrial, you mean?" Jen suggested.
"Aliens?" Pacey asked himself. "I still don't believe it. How come we're the only ones who remember anything?"
"I don't know," Dawson admitted. "Wait…there's one thing. I was having a talk with this guy, Max, back in LA. He seemed interested with my opinions regarding aliens. So…"
"So you think he is one?" Joey asked him.
"I was thinking he might be some sort of 'alien hunter'," Dawson told her. "Maybe he did something so that I would remember. Sent some sort of message"
"What about the rest of us, then?" Jen asked. "Why do we remember?"
Dawson paused to think for a moment.
"That's what we have to find out," he announced.
*****
Max typed away at a laptop in his room. He was looking over it, when Michael appeared behind him.
"Find anything," Michael asked him.
"Apparently I've been accepted to USC," Max quipped. "Oh, and Liz and Kyle just broke up."
Michael had a puzzled look on his face.
"Just broke up?" he asked. "You hacked into the guy's computer journal?"
Max closed the laptop.
"It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be," Max told him. "At first, I tried using words that might be important to him, but that wasn't it. Then, I tried using words that were important to him…"
"And it worked, right?" Michael asked.
Max just nodded.
"It's almost like it isn't even his." Max told him. "It's mine. It has my wording and sentence structure. It talks about people I know. But I don't remember any of what it talks about happening."
"This just keeps getting weirder by the minute," Michael commented. "We're from another planet, meaning weird stuff generally happens to us. FBI conspiracies, strange weapons, heck even other aliens I can understand. But this is the whole space/time continuum getting screwed around with."
"I understand that," Max informed him. "We just have to deal with this for now. Go ahead like nothing's wrong."
"Got a plan, oh fearless leader," Michael said, mockingly.
Max stood up and walked to the door.
"We help Liz find a way to get our powers back," he explained. "Then we turn Isabel back to normal, and go back to LA to get that meteorite."
"And what about the other guy?" Michael asked. "Dawson, you said his name was? Don't you think he'll realize something's wrong."
Max stopped to think for a moment.
"I don't know," he admitted. "I'll figure it out when the time comes."
Then he left.
*****
Joey, you have now entered the Twilight Zone.
Joey was at the Crashdown, cleaning up the kitchen.
Suddenly, she thought she heard a noise behind her.
Stop it, she thought. You're jumping at shadows.
Slowly, she backed up. Then she bumped into something…or somebody.
She gasped and turned around to see Dawson standing right behind her.
"Dawson?" she asked. "You scared me."
"Sorry Jo," he apologized. "I didn't mean to."
Joey smiled at him.
"It's okay," she reassured him. "I'm just a little jumpy."
"Who wouldn't be?" he responded. "I mean, this isn't exactly what you would call a normal situation, is it? Even so, I have to admit this is really fascinating."
"Uh oh, is that 'film maker' Dawson I hear?" Joey asked. "You're turning this whole thing into a script, aren't you?"
Dawson just smiled at her.
"You know me too well," he said with a smile.
They then became silent for a moment, before Joey turned to face him again.
"Dawson?" she asked. "We have to talk about something."
"What?" he asked.
"Before you left," she began. "Well, we kissed."
Dawson sighed.
"Yeah," he admits. "We did."
"So, what did it mean?" she asked him.
Dawson moved closer to her, looking deep into her eyes.
"You tell me," he replied.
She didn't answer. Instead, she just looked at him. They move closer, their faces almost touching…
Then, they heard a voice at the door.
"Hey," Pacey says. "What's up?"
The moment ruined, they acted as if everything was fine.
"Nothing much," Joey said.
Pacey still had his suspicions about what was happening, but he kept them to himself for the time being.
"Everything okay in here," a voice asked.
They all turned around to see who it belonged to, and not one of them was prepared for what they saw.
It had been years since Dawson had last seen her. Pacey wasn't that close to Joey back then, so his memory was even less accurate.
Joey, however, recognized her immediately.
For some reason, you never forget your own mother's face.
"M-mom?" she asks, her voice barely a whisper.
"What's wrong, sweetie?" Lillian Potter asked her daughter. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
Behind her, Dawson and Pacey stared in awe.
"Dawson…" Pacey began.
"Don't say a word," Dawson warned him. "Just don't say anything."
Pacey kept silent.
"Hello Dawson…Pacey" Lillian greets them. "Look, I don't mind you two coming back here, just as long as you don't get in the way. Ok?"
"Uh…deal" Dawson answered.
"Great," she said. "Oh, and Pacey, tell your father that I owe him one for that whole thing with the break-ins."
She left. Joey sat down in a stool, her face as white as a ghost. She was breathing heavy.
"Joey?" Dawson asked her, concerned. "Jo? Are you okay?"
Joey looked at him with frightened eyes.
"T-that was my mother, Dawson," she said. "That was really my…"
"We don't know that," Pacey interrupted her. "Maybe it was another 'pod person' or something."
"It was really her, I know it," she exclaimed. "She's dead. Dead people don't just come back to life. How is this…"
"I wish I knew, Joey" Dawson told her.
Joey reached up and hugged him, shivering.
*****
That night, after dark, someone began creeping around the Crashdown. Surrounded by night, there was no way for anyone to see their face.
Then, the intruder spoke into his cell phone.
"I'm outside right now," he spoke into it.
"Then stop talking to me and torch the place," the person on the other line demanded. "We get rid of the girl first, that's his weakness. Once she's out of the way, he'll be vulnerable. Especially now."
"As you command, lord K'Var," he responds, and then turns it off. He broke a window, and threw something inside. It was small, barely the size of his hand. But then it started to beep.
*****
In her room, upstairs, Joey was sitting on her bed looking through some old books.
Most noticeably, a yearbook.
She shifted through it, looking at the pictures. Then she reached the prom section.
And saw her and Dawson.
Me and Dawson? she thought. I don't get it.
Then she looks over to a photograph on a nearby table, also from the prom. On it are her, Dawson, Jen, Drue, Pacey, Gretchen, Lily, and some boy she doesn't recognize.
She picked it up.
"Too weird," she said out loud, and then notices the back corner was loose.
She bent the back of the frame a little, and opened it up slightly.
Behind it was a necklace. Not like the one Dawson gave her, but different. It was old, and had the end cracked a little. It seemed to be metal, and a deep blue. There was some sort of 'whirlwind' design on it as well.
Joey put it on and slid it slightly under her shirt.
She walked out onto the balcony and looked up at the stars.
"Why do we keep doing this, Dawson?" she asked herself. "We dance around things so much, that I've forgotten why. We call each other 'just friends' when you and I both know it's not true. I just wish, for just once, we could forget all the complications and just be…us."
She leaned back against the wall and felt something push back. Curious, she went to check what it was.
There appeared to be a loose brick in the wall. She carefully removed it, and found a book sitting there.
Jackpot! she thought. It looks like some sort of diary.
Then she smelled something. Something burning.
Oh my god, she thought…right before she noticed smoke coming from downstairs.
*****
Back in Capeside, Liz was at Leery's Fresh Fish after hours. Max had let them all in, so they could try and figure out what had happened.
Well, all except for Alex and Isabel.
Liz was at a table, looking into a microscope.
"Something's wrong," she said to herself, and then called over to the group.
"Maria! Max!" she said. "Something's wrong."
"You have a gift for blabbering the obvious," Maria quipped.
"No, with this," she indicated to the microscope.
Maria looked into the lens.
"What about it?" she asked.
"It's not my blood type," Liz told her. "I took a blood sample, to see if there was anything wrong with me first, but it's not my blood type."
"Come on, how is that possible?" Michael asked. "What, your blood type just…changed?"
"That's it, it's not possible," Liz answered. "Unless…"
She stopped to think for a moment, then turned to Max and Michael.
"One of you, give me a cell sample," she asked them. "Skin scrape, fingernail, hair…anything."
Max started to pinch the top of his hand until he drew blood.
"Max?!" Liz asked, concerned.
"Might as well make it as accurate as possible" he told her, and put some of his blood on a microscope slide.
Liz began to examine it…but then she froze.
"This isn't possible," she exclaimed.
"What isn't?" Maria asked.
"It's human," she answered. "It's completely human."
Max went dead white.
"That's impossible," Max answered, his voice a whisper.
"Max," Liz told him. "According to this, you're 100% human."
They all stood in shock for a moment, not noticing Max slowly back towards the door. He opened it, and started to run.
"Max?" she asked after him. "MAX!"
Then she ran out the door, pursuing him.
*****
Dawson stood outside the UFO center, looking up after it.
It's just impossible, he thought. I mean, this kind of stuff happens in movies, right? But I never thought it would happen for real.
Just then, Pacey walked up to him.
"Dawson," he ordered. "We have to talk."
Dawson turned to face him.
"About what?" he asked.
"What exactly were you and Joey doing when I came in?" Pacey asked, sternly.
Uh oh, Dawson thought. Here it comes.
"It's complicated, Pace"
"Sure it is," Pacey said, sarcastically. "You just go after my ex-girlfriend the second I leave town."
"Pacey, that is not what's happening," Dawson argued. "And even if it was, you're not exactly in a position to be accusing about it. At least I waited until you 'left town'."
Pacey gave him a cold stare.
"Pacey," Dawson said, his mood changing. "I don't want to fight you."
"Well, that's pretty much unavoidable, ain't it?" Pacey replied.
That's when they heard it. An explosion, coming from across the street.
They turned towards it and see that the Crashdown had erupted into flames.
They break into a run, and see Mike and Lillian Potter running out of the building, coughing because of smoke inhalation.
"What happened?" Dawson asked. "Where's Joey?"
"Still in there," Lillian said, between coughs. "Oh god, my baby."
Dawson's face twisted into a look of pure terror.
Without hesitation, both he and Pacey ran into the Crashdown.
*****
Max had ran halfway across Capeside, with Liz following close behind him.
"MAX?" she called after him. "MAX?"
They reached his house, as he ran down the dock.
When he reached the edge of it, he stopped. He had nowhere else to go.
Panting, he fell to his knees, looking out at the water.
"Max?" Liz asked, walking up behind him.
Max didn't answer, instead he continued breathing rapidly. Liz kneeled down beside him.
"You're hyperventilating," she told him, worried. "Just relax, ok? Take a deep breath, and…"
Then she noticed the look on his face. He was smiling. He was out of breath, she saw tears in his eyes…but yet he was smiling.
The he looked at her.
Unexpectedly, he kissed her. She was surprised at first, but then started to kiss him back.
And did so for the next several minutes.
*****
Dawson and Pacey ran into the burning Crashdown.
"JOEY!" Dawson hollered. "JOEY? Where are you?"
"Potter?" Pacey yelled as well. "Just tell us where you are."
They didn't receive any answer.
At that moment, however, a burning piece of wood from above started to crash down, grazing Dawson's forehead.
Dawson screamed in pain, and then fell to the ground.
"Dawson?!" Pacey yelled, and went over to help him up.
"We have to find her," he replied, his forehead bleeding slightly.
"This place could collapse any second," Pacey attempted to argue.
"I'M NOT LEAVING WITHOUT HER!" Dawson ordered, making Pacey back down a little.
They begin running up the staircase, heading toward the apartment above. Then, they saw her.
Joey was lying on the ground unconscious. A small piece of pipe must have broken off in the fire and fell.
And now, it had impaled her left leg to the ground.
"JOEY!!!" Dawson screamed, and rushed towards her. Quickly, he and Pacey remove the pipe from her leg.
"We've got to get her out of here," Dawson told him.
But then, Pacey noticed the small pool of blood underneath her.
"She lost a lot of blood," Pacey admitted, worried.
Dawson shakes his head, refusing to accept what was happening. Joey was still breathing, but he didn't know how long that would last.
He put his hand on her knee, where the pipe had hit.
"I'm going to try and stop the blood flow," he explained.
"We've got to get out of here, and get her to a hospital," Pacey said. "Dawson! We have to leave now, or we'll ALL die."
Just then, Dawson noticed Joey's breathing becoming shallower.
"Jo, please…hang on," he begged her.
"Dawson, come on," Pacey yelled again.
"Please," he begged again, very quietly. "Don't leave me."
At first, Pacey thought it was a trick of the light. Or maybe the smoke was getting to him.
But no, it wasn't that.
At that moment, Dawson's hand started to GLOW a bright blue. Pacey, wide-eyed, watched as Joey's knee started to actually heal itself where Dawson's glowing hand touched it. Eventually, it was as if the injury had never happened. Joey's breathing returned to normal.
Dawson, just as shocked, turns to face Pacey.
"What the hell are you?" Pacey asked, and slowly backed away.
However, he didn't notice the roof above him start to fall.
"Pacey?" Dawson warned. "PACEY! LOOK OUT!"
Dawson reached out his hand to try and warn him, but was too late.
Pacey felt some unseen force coming from Dawson's hand, pushing him first to safety from the derbies, the through the weakened wall.
He fell to where the firemen had a safety mat waiting for them.
Dawson stared at his own hand in shock, wondering what had happened.
"Anyone else in there?" a fireman from outside asked.
Without hesitation, Dawson picked up Joey and jumped out the hole in the wall.
*****
"I'm fine, mom" Joey reassured her worried mother. "I'm okay, now."
"We're going to find out who did this," Lillian reassured her, and walked towards Mr. Witter, who wanted to ask them some questions.
Joey saw Dawson sitting with Jen and Drue in the corner. Curious, she walked up to them.
"Dawson?" she asked. "Thank you."
Dawson gave her a smile. It disappeared when Pacey walked up to them.
"What it going on, Leery?" he demanded.
"Pacey, what are you…?" Joey started to ask.
"You were as good as dead, Jo," Pacey informed her. "But Dawson saved you. I don't know how, but he did."
Joey turned to face Dawson.
"Dawson, what's he talking about?"
Making sure no one except his four friends saw, Dawson gently touched his forehead. Once again, his hand started to glow.
And his forehead was all healed.
"Ouch," Dawson joked, and smiled slightly.
"Woah," Drue exclaimed. "How'd you do that?"
"I don't know," Dawson told them.
Joey slowly reached into her pocket and pulled out the journal she found before the fire started.
"I might," she announced.
Next: Max is happier than he’s ever been in his life. But will that change one he finds out her new situation. Dawson experiments with his new powers. Kyle finally gets to Capeside. Pacey’s happy with his new situation.
And what’s Joey going to do with Liz’s journal?
