Cut to the Kent's farmhouse. Chloe Sullivan enters the attic, looking for Clark.
She sees him, staring out the window at the stars. She climbs the stairs leading up to him.
CHLOE: Hey, farm boy. You missed the dance.
Clark sighs.
CLARK: Sure, rub it in.
CHLOE: Cheer up, Clark. You didn't miss much. It was just the usual high school shindig that this town is famous for. Oh, Whitney and Lana got crowned king and queen.
Clark gives a small smile.
CLARK: I told her she would. Well, her parents said she would.
Chloe gives him a confused look.
CLARK: Never mind. You had to be there.
CHLOE: You've got to stop torturing yourself. You're acting like that guy on 'Dawson's Creek'…the first season. I mean, look at you. You're a babe. Stop with the whole 'puppy dog eyes' thing, and she'll come to you.
Clark smiles at her again.
CLARK: Thank you for saying that.
CHLOE: It's the truth.
CLARK: Truth be told, I'm sort of hoping she doesn't.
Chloe looks confused.
CHLOE: Woah, Clark. Back it up for a second. Isn't this the girl that you've…
CLARK: I'm having a few second thoughts now.
She grins for a second, but then hides it.
CHLOE: Finally noticed her for the 'pretty-faced' shallow cheerleader she is, huh?
CLARK: NO! That's not…it's not that at all. I just…had a few revelations lately.
He turns away from her for a moment. Chloe puts her hand on his shoulder.
CHLOE: Hey, this is me remember? I've known you since the sixth grade, Clark. You've never been this…well…depressed before. You're usually 'Mr. Positive' about everything.
Clark sighed.
CLARK: Chloe, can I ask you a personal question.
She nods her head.
CHLOE: Shoot.
CLARK: Did you ever have a secret…that you didn't confide in anyone because you were afraid they wouldn't understand? That it would scare them. That they would think less of you?
Chloe stays silent.
CLARK: Chloe…?
CHLOE: My father.
Clark looks confused.
CLARK: What about him?
CHLOE: Not the one you know. My…uh…my real father. My parents sort of broke up about three years before I moved to Smallville.
CLARK: Then who's is he. Really?
CHLOE: Some army guy, that's all my mom ever tells me when I ask.
Clark grabs her hand.
CLARK: Chloe, can I trust you?
CHLOE: What?
CLARK: What I am about to show you, you can't repeat to anyone. Ever. Because if the wrong people ever found out, me, my parents, even you, would be put in danger.
Chloe looks at him.
CHLOE: Ok, now you're starting to freak me out a little.
CLARK: I'm sorry. But you have to…
CHLOE: Ok, ok…I promise.
Clark smiles at her.
CLARK: I knew I could count on you. Just…don't be scared, ok?
He lifts up a cloth on a nearby table, and picks up his dad's knife that is hiding underneath.
Then he aims it at his own heart.
CHLOE: Clark? CLARK!
He stabs himself, then hands the knife to Chloe.
CHLOE: Oh my god…oh my god…oh my…
She looks at Clark's chest. His shirt is ripped where the knife went, but there's no blood. Not even a scratch.
Her eyes widened in disbelief.
CLARK: Th-that's impossible. I saw…
Then she looks down at the knife, which is now bent completely out of shape.
She staggers back.
CHLOE: Ok, uh…you just stabbed yourself. You're not hurt at all, and this thing is bent. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but the only way for that to happen would be…if your skin is stronger than steel.
Clark nods.
CLARK: That's the point, really. I'm sort of not from around here.
CHLOE: (sarcastic)Really? Is that a fact? Clark, if this was an old sci-fi flick, I'd half expect you to be from outer space.
Clark bites his lip.
CHLOE: You're…you're not? Are you a…I need to sit down.
She slowly slides to the floor.
CHLOE: My best friend's an alien(laughs nervously). You're not going to probe me or anything, are you?
CLARK: Wasn't planning on it.
Clark starts to laugh.
Chloe looks up at him, and he stops.
CLARK: Don't be scared of me, Chloe. I'm still the guy you always knew. You just…know a little more about me now.
CHLOE: Why didn't you tell me about this before?
CLARK: Because I didn't know before. My parents just informed of it yesterday…I'm still sort of adjusting.
CHLOE: Do you…uh…can you do anything else, or is it just that you can't be hurt?
CLARK: Well, yeah…I can do some stuff.
She smiles.
CHLOE: Show me.
Clark gives a 'are you kidding' look.
CLARK: No way.
CHLOE: Come on. Let me see…
Clark grins, then walks over to her and picks her up off the ground.
CHLOE: Clark? What…?
CLARK: Hold on tight…
*****
Becoming a blur of speed, Clark started to run, Chloe still in his arms. Running past his father, who feels the gust of wind his super speed creates.
JONATHAN: What in the…
They move faster still…racing away from the Kent farm, and out into the fields. The corn stalks spread apart as the unseen runner races through it.
Chloe holds on to Clark tightly, looking in awe at the speeding landscape around them.
CHLOE: HOW…HOW FAST ARE WE GOING?
CLARK: I HAVE NO IDEA. WANT TO GO FASTER?
Chloe nods her head…and Clark adds on extra speed.
No longer a blur, now you couldn't even see them. You just felt a gust of wind racing past.
Then, they race across a stream water. But they don't sink in, because Clark is moving so fast that the molecules of the water don't have time to adjust.
Then they hit the breaking point…
A shockwave follows Clark and Chloe, causing the surrounding area to shake for a moment. Finally, they come to a stop by the water.
Chloe starts to catch her breath, her hair a mess.
CLARK: What was that noise?
CHLOE: (panting)Sonic boom…you just…you just broke the sound barrier. Clark, you broke the sound barrier…on foot?
A giant smile comes over her face.
CHLOE: YAHOOOOOO!
She spins around in circles.
CLARK: Chloe?
She grabs him by the collar.
CHLOE: That was…so…COOL! Come on…let's do it again.
CLARK: Ok, maybe you'd better relax.
CHLOE: Relax? Clark, you just did something that nothing less than a plane has ever accomplished. This is just…it's uncanny.
They sit down by the water.
CHLOE: So…how did you get here. To…uh…this planet, I mean?
CLARK: The meteor shower. It wasn't just meteors. My…ship…came along with it. My parents found the ship, pulled me out, and hid it. They didn't even tell me about any of this until about a day ago.
CHLOE: And now you're telling me. Why? Why not…I don't know…Lana?
Clark sighed.
CLARK: Because the same thing that brought me to Earth killed her parents. She would hate me.
CHLOE: So…why me?
He turns to face her.
CLARK: Why not you? Chloe, you're my best friend. The one person other than my parents that I trust my life with.
She smiles.
CHLOE: That thing with Whitney's trucks. Did you?
Clark grins.
CLARK: Hey, he hung me in the middle of a field with an 'S' on my chest. I think he had it coming.
Chloe's eyes went wide.
CHLOE: They made you the 'scarecrow'? I thought nothing can hurt you.
CLARK: Nothing except those meteors. They were made of some sort of green, glowing rock. Whenever I'm around them, I get weak. I lose my strength, and I can get hurt like any ordinary human being. And Lana wears a piece of it around her neck.
CHLOE: Glowing? Maybe it's some sort of radiation? That would explain all the strange things that have been happening in Smallville since you landed here.
CLARK: If it's radiation, why hasn't it effected her yet?
Chloe grins.
CHLOE: I think I'm going to find out. You know where I can find more of this rock?
CLARK: No, but it shouldn't be too hard. Just keep it away from me, ok?
She nods.
CHLOE: So, you can run faster than a speeding bullet, you can benchpress cars, and you can't be hurt. Anything else I don't know about?
CLARK: I'm not sure yet. This is still sort of new to me.
Chloe takes his hand.
CHLOE: Well, you can count on me to help you with this, Clark.
CLARK: This feels good, you know?
CHLOE: What does?
CLARK: I've been different for a long time, even before I found out where I came from. It…feels really nice to finally talk to somebody about it. And to tell you the truth, I'm glad it's you.
They smile at each other for a moment.
CLARK: You ready to go?
She grins, and Clark picks her up.
CHLOE: Floor it, farm boy.
*****
Clark and Chloe arrive back at the Kent farm, and walk at a normal pace once they are a few feet from the barn.
They climb back up the ladder to where Clark's telescope is.
CHLOE: What happened with Jeremy Creek…was that you?
Clark nods his head.
CLARK: He was going to kill everyone on the dance floor. I couldn't let that happen.
She smiles.
CHLOE: You saved my life, you know? Same with everybody else, and they don't even know it.
CLARK: I'd sort of like it to stay that way. I'm not a hero, Chloe. I just…did what I had to do.
CHLOE: If it came to it, would you do it again.
CLARK: You know I would.
CHLOE: Then maybe you're what this town needs.
She smiles, and walks closer to him.
CHLOE: Smallville's personal guardian angel, watching over them.
CLARK: Maybe. And maybe you're what I need.
He looks at her.
CLARK: It's so lonely, you know? That I have to separate myself from people, afraid that I might hurt them.
CHLOE: Clark, you're not alone. You have your parents, and you have me. And you could never, ever hurt me.
Clark pulls her close.
CLARK: That, I am eternally grateful for.
He kisses her. They begin to kiss passionately…
*****
CLARK: CHLOE?
Chloe's eyes snap open.
CHLOE: Oh, sorry. Just daydreaming a little. What did you say?
CLARK: That maybe you're right. I mean, these people that are effected by the meteors…they could hurt somebody. Or worse. Maybe someone who can do what I do can make a difference.
She smiles at him.
CHLOE: Ok, 'Zorro'…but just remember me and my wall are at your disposal.
Clark smiles, and walks up to her. He hugs her.
CLARK: Thank you…for everything.
He doesn't see the saddened expression on her face.
*****
Cut to outside. Chloe is leaving the Kent farm.
But she turns back towards Clark, still at the window. He's looking at Lana, who is sitting on her porch.
Chloe sighs.
CHLOE: (to herself)Yep, stuck in a Dawson's Creek episode.
Then she walks away.
