Well, kittens Archive: Just tell me where it’s going Additional ‘stuff’: Nothing I can think of Title: Hurley Burley – Two – Cats out of the bag Gibbs did everything but carry Tony into the house. Tony
wasn’t feeling well enough to either be embarrassed or object, so Gibbs had
pretty much free rein in settling Tony on the couch, covering him with a plaid
woolen blanket and making sure he had juice and his pills on the table beside
him. Tony closed his eyes, squirming to get comfortable. His
stitches were itching and he was afraid if Gibbs caught him rubbing them he
might not understand how irritating the sensation was. Tony was dozing when he felt a gentle hand stroke his
forehead. He reached up and smiled sleepily, yawning. ‘Sorry.’ Gibbs smiled. ‘It’s okay. Sleep is good. Ducky said so.’ Tony smiled and snuggled under the blanket. ‘Why did
Burley leave?’ A shadow crossed Gibbs’ eyes for a brief moment but Tony
was too sleepy to notice. ‘He got a better job.’ ‘Better ‘n workin’ with…you?’ Tony slurred, almost
asleep. Gibbs ruffled Tony’s hair. ‘Get some rest now.’ Gibbs sighed deeply, settled into the armchair beside
Tony and picked up the newspaper. After re-reading the same paragraph for ten
minutes, he gave up, closing his eyes, getting back some of the sleep he had
missed in the previous few days. **************************** The doorbell woke Gibbs but Tony slept on, barely
stirring at the loud sound in the quiet room. Gibbs opened the door and stood back letting Ducky and
Kate in. Softly he warned: ‘He’s sleeping.’ Ducky held out a tub of ice-cream in a paper bag. ‘For
Tony.’ ‘Did you get them?’ Kate nodded, grinning. ‘Yup. Boy and a girl.’ ‘Where are they?’ Gibbs looked at Kate’s feet. ‘In the back of the car. They’re sleeping.’ ‘Gibbs?’ Tony’s voice carried from the couch, soft and
tired. Gibbs looked into the living room. ‘I’m coming Tony.’ Ducky nodded. ‘Go. I’ll put the ice cream in the freezer.
Kate, I think they might be awake now.’ Gibbs headed back into the living room. Kate turned to the door then followed Ducky into the
kitchen, closing the door behind her. ‘Ducky…’ ‘Caitlin my dear, do not ask questions to which you
already know the answers.’ Closing the refrigerator door, Ducky waggled his
finger. Smiling, Kate headed out to the car. ******************************** Gibbs helped Tony sit up, leaning against a heap of
pillows. ‘Okay?’ Tony smiled. ‘Yeah. Did I hear Ducky?’ ‘Uh huh. And Kate.’ ‘Did Ducky bring ice cream?’ Gibbs chuckled. ‘Yes. And Kate bought you something.’ Excited, Tony grinned as Ducky and Kate came into the
living room, Ducky leaning down to hug Tony, Kate standing back, hands behind
her. ‘Kate?’ Tony looked across, eyes sweeping from Gibbs to
Ducky and finally back to Kate. Kate’s hands came out from behind her back, holding out
the wire cage. Tony stared silently for a moment. Then, eyes wide, he
whispered: ‘Annie and Tommy.’ Ducky and Gibbs exchanged amused glances and Kate walked
across to the couch, opening the cage, lifting out first the tiny black kitten
then the calico, setting them on Tony’s chest where they immediately began to
explore the strange new surroundings. ‘The boy’s the black one.’ Kate pointed. ‘Jethro, I would appreciate some assistance with their
equipment.’ Ducky said, crossing to the door. With no idea what he was letting
himself in for, Gibbs followed Ducky out. ‘Ducky!’ Jethro surveyed the contents of the back seat.
There was a huge white wire…thing occupying most of the back of the car and
Gibbs wondered if Kate had realized the size of the kittens when she bought
the…whatever it was. Ducky’s hand pointed from item to item as he listed them.
‘Litter tray…litter…bed…food bowls…food…water bowls…toys…scratching post…kitten
pen.’ Gibbs was sure he was being teased. ‘They’re gonna write their
Mom?’ Ducky rolled his eyes. ‘If you want them to stay in one
place, you need a pen. This has space for food and water bowls and a litter
tray.’ Gibbs shook his head in disbelief. ‘I need a bigger
house.’ Smiling, Ducky asked gently: ‘How’s he doing?’ ‘He asked me if I preferred Burley.’ ‘Oh.’ Ducky began to hand Gibbs some of the things from
the car. He had heard from Kate that Gibbs had seemed…close to Burley. And that
Tony had spent most of the time they had been on board the ship sulking. Gibbs sighed. ‘Tony’s not Burley.’ ‘Indeed.’ Gibbs scowled. ‘Thanks for your input Duck.’ The ME smiled. ‘You don’t need my *input*, Jethro, to
know what to do.’ Gibbs shifted his grip on the pile of stuff in his arms
and continued up the path. *********************************** Tony was on the couch, Kate kneeling beside him working
hard to keep the kittens on his lap. At the sounds of Gibbs and Ducky coming
into the room, arms loaded, the kittens froze and began to mew. ‘Shhh…its okay. It’s just Daddy and Uncle Ducky.’ Gibbs huffed. ‘Daddy?’ Tony nodded, yawning. ‘Uh huh.’ Gibbs shook his head and dropped some of the things he
held. ‘Over the weekend, I thought you might cut a cat flap in
the back door Gibbs.’ Tony said, laying back, smiling softly. Ignoring him, Gibbs walked into the kitchen, Ducky
following. ******************************** Ducky and Kate left a few minutes later, the kittens
safely settled on a blanket at one end their pen beds, litter trays and bowls
in the opposite corner. Under Kate’s instruction, he and Ducky had unfolded and
assembled the pen, moving it several times. Finally, Kate seemed happy with the
pen’s position, moments before Gibbs temper finally snapped. Thankfully, Kate
sensed his mood and stood back, smiling. ‘Perfect. Natural light and out of any
drafts.’ ‘There are *no* drafts in this house.’ Gibbs muttered. ******************************* Gibbs watched Tony sleep for a while, then lifted himself
out of the armchair, walking into the kitchen, telling himself he was just
making sure the kittens were not up to anything. As the light illuminated the room, the kittens woke,
pressing against the mesh sides of the pen, alternately mewing and purring. Lifting the wire lid, Gibbs reached in, both kittens
lifting themselves up, mewing as his hand stroked first one head then the
other. ‘While Daddy’s asleep you can a look around I guess.’ Lifting them out,
Gibbs lowered them to the tiled floor. For a few steps, the kittens slid
around, the shiny surface offering them no grip, but by the time they reached
the kitchen table, they had begun to adjust. The black kitten – Gibbs still
couldn’t remember which kitten Tony had given which name – stretched up and
began to scratch the table leg. ‘No!’ Gibbs snapped, relieved when the kitten immediately
dropped to the floor. ‘Where’s the scratching…ahh…here.’ He pulled the
string-wrapped plank from beside the refrigerator and laid it down on the
floor, putting the kitten on it. The strange sensation startled the kitten and
it mewed loudly. Not wanting to wake Tony, Gibbs picked the kitten up, cradling
it gingerly. ‘Do *not* pee on me, understand?’ Scenting the human, the kitten
rubbed his head against Gibbs, purring loudly. Carefully, Gibbs rubbed his
fingertip under the kittens’ chin. ‘You like that?’ Bored with the lack of attention, the calico began to climb up Gibbs’ leg, tiny needle-sharp claws digging into his flesh. ‘OW!!’ Reaching down he scooped her up, walking over to the white pen. ‘Bedtime. Go to sleep now.’ He let the pen lid down and flicked the two clips, locking it closed. Just before turning the light out, Gibbs paused, watching the two kittens snuggling together. Smiling, he said softly: ‘Your Daddy likes to snuggle too.’ End of Part Two
