Title: Sawdust gets everywhere

Tony snagged the papers from the doorstep and walked into the kitchen, finally seeing the note Gibbs left an hour earlier. Yawning, he squinted at the words: ‘At the Fuentes place. Wear old clothes if you drop by.’

‘Hey!’

Gibbs looked down. Dropping his voice, he turned to the boy sitting cross-legged beside him as he measured a length of timber, marking it with a pencil. ‘Now we get to see if your password works Billy.’ He was pleased to see Billy’s answering grin.

‘Hey Tony. You wanna come up, gotta have a password.’

‘A password?’ Tony frowned.

‘It’s a good one.’ Billy confirmed, looking down at the man on the ground below them.

Tony sighed. ‘Well, let’s see. Um…tree.’

Billy shook his head, grinning.

Tony’s mobile face moved in every direction as he thought some more. ‘How about…Marine.’

Billy shook his head, adding: ‘You’re getting warm.’

Behind him, Tony noticed Gibbs signing…Santa Fe? He frowned and Gibbs rolled his eyes and saluted.

Tony nodded. ‘Ah…Semper Fi.’

Billy smiled. ‘You can come up.’

‘Slowly, Tony.’ Gibbs cautioned. ‘It’s not exactly finished.’

‘I have a better idea. Your Mom says we can go out for breakfast. Wanna come?’

Billy stood up. ‘Yeah!’

‘Gibbs?’ Tony looked up.

‘I’ve just got a couple more bits to finish, then I’m done for the day. You two go on ahead.’

Tony smiled. ‘Okay. I’ll bring you some coffee.’

Gibbs shook his head, holding up a large mug, steam drifting off the surface. ‘Mrs Fuentes makes a great cup of coffee.’

Tony laughed and stood at the foot of the wooden steps, prepared to steady Billy as he climbed down. He had no idea how long Billy had been sitting up there, and he was concerned his legs would be wobbly. His always had been.

He put his hand on Billy’s shoulders. ‘Go get dressed Billy. I’ll wait out here.’

Gibbs watched Billy leave, stared into space for a moment, then picked up the plank, a couple of nails and a hammer, fitting the plank in place. As if it were an afterthought, he called down: ‘Hey, Dinozzo, you gonna be okay with Billy?’

Tony rolled his eyes and pulled a face. ‘I think I can handle it boss.’

Gibbs locked eyes with Tony. ‘Be careful Tony, okay?’

Tony smiled as Billy crashed out of the house and ran towards him. ‘We’ll be fine boss.’

Later…

‘Billy’s a good kid.’

Gibbs nodded, fingers carding through Tony’s head as it rested on his lap. He knew Tony would never say it, but they had so little time to themselves, Gibbs disappearing for a whole Saturday probably wasn’t Tony’s idea of fun. ‘Another weekend I’ll be done with the tree house.’

‘You had fun.’

Gibbs smiled. ‘Yeah. Different to the boat.’

‘Your kid would have had the best tree house in the neighborhood.’ Tony said almost to himself.

‘*My* kid would have known that pizza and dinner are different words.’

Tony grinned.

‘And that there’s more to life than movies.’

Tony rolled his eyes at that one.

‘And…’ Gibbs tried to think of something else.

Tony smiled. ‘He’d have had the cutest Dad in class.’

‘Cutest?’ Gibbs queried.

‘Uh huh. Cutest.’ Tony confirmed.

Gibbs crooked an eyebrow. ‘Okay.’ Then he huffed, squirming. ‘Sawdust gets everywhere!.’

Tony giggled, wriggling his eyebrows. ‘Sounds like you might need someone to…um…help you reach the awkward bits…I mean, with your shoulder…’

Gibbs smiled, reaching for the phone. ‘I gotta order some more timber. Go on up.’

‘How do you sign: ‘Can I scrub your back for you?’

Gibbs hands lifted over Tony’s chest and Tony frowned.

Tony smiled. He sat up, hands moving.

‘Back Tony.’ Gibbs demonstrated. ‘Not book.’ Slowly, he signed: ‘Can I scrub your back.’

‘I’m a beginner. Be nice to me.’ Tony got to his feet. Grinning widely, he signed slowly: ‘Don’t be long.’

Gibb’s signed reply was something Tony recognized. It was one of the first phrases Abby had taught him.

‘Good thing you’re gonna wash those hands Gibbs.’ Tony muttered, heading for the staircase.
