Title: Always wear protection

NCIS HQ

Gibbs had a pile of paperwork as high as the Washington Monument to complete before he could get away. Finally, he signed the last document, the background hum of the cleaners’ vacuums buzzing around him, the insistent sound blocked out as he typed, printed and signed sheet after sheet.

Gibbs residence - late night

The house was dark. Expected. There was no note or food left out. Unsurprising. And the spare room door was closed. Worrying.

Gibbs was too tired to fight. And he guessed…no, knew…a fight was what he could expect. Kate had owned up that she had ratted him out over the vest. He wasn’t angry with her. She wasn’t to know just how big of a deal it would be for the man sleeping in the bed ten feet from the one he got into. Sliding his undershirt off, he climbed under the covers, shivering at the cold touch of cotton on his bare thighs and shoulders.

Five am next morning…

Gibbs woke to the reassuringly familiar sound of Tony’s uneven breathing. He was close to waking, his subconscious still active, and his dreams were always most vivid as he drifted off to sleep and woke from it. He reached around Tony, pulling him close.

‘Don’t. I’m still pissed with you. That mattress is like the Rockies.’

Gibbs half-smiled. ‘The glass was bullet-proof.’

‘Yeah. And you’re not!’ Tony sighed. ‘What if he had shot through the open door or got off a second shot when you ran out?!’

Gibbs didn’t bother answering. Tony was right. Those things hadn’t happened, but he was right nevertheless. They could have done.

‘Well?!’ Tony demanded.

Gibbs sat up and held Tony’s forearms tightly. His voice was firm and loud in the quiet room. ‘I’m still here Tony.’

Tony looked up at Gibbs. ‘We’re buying a new mattress. This weekend.’

Gibbs shook his head. ‘No, we’re not. Next time you get the urge to sleep in the spare room, don’t.’

Tony looked at Gibbs. ‘Next time *you* get the urge to risk your life, don’t.’

‘Deal.’ Gibbs nodded, moving his hands.

‘Did Kate make you call her Ma’am?’

Gibbs smiled. ‘Is that what she told you?’

Tony scowled. ‘You’re not gonna tell me, are you?’

Gibbs got out of bed, turning back as he reached the door. ‘Tony.’

The younger man lifted himself onto his side, resting his head on his hand. ‘Yeah?’

‘I worry about you. You don’t worry about me. Got it?’

Tony sighed then smiled. ‘Yes boss.’
