Title: The
morning after the night before
They lay in a
tangled heap of limbs and bedclothes. Even in the depths
of winter, Jed never seemed to feel the cold and a
sheet and blanket were all that covered them. Jed felt
the body next to him stir slightly, and he wrapped
his arms around the cool exposed skin of the sleeping
form, kissing the top of his lover’s head gently. Even
this wasn’t enough to stir someone for whom snatching
a few hours deep sleep wherever and whenever
possible had become a habit.
Outside the door, he
could hear the familiar low voice of the Head of his
Secret Service detail. The door was locked, and Jed knew
no-one could get in unless he unlocked it. The
infrequent few hours of togetherness were not enough, but
they had to be. In separate offices, in very different
jobs, the two of them existed in a goldfish bowl of no
privacy, of the constant shadowy presence of the Secret
Service agents.
They had shared laughter. And tears.
Lots of tears. They had found other people to love,
had children, and experienced different things in
their lives. But somehow, whatever happened, they
always found each other again. Some invisible bond drew
them back together. And into each other’s arms.
He knew every inch of the face of the person lying
with their back to him. Every line, every tiny
imperfection, everything. Over forty years, he had committed it
to memory, able to recall it in minutest detail
simply by thinking about it. The face of the person who
had first shown him what love was, then, later, when
he had finally accepted who he was, how to return it
until, four decades later, Jed couldn’t imagine what
life would be like if he hadn’t met Leo McGarry.
