‘Good morning.’ Josh rolled over lazily, eyes focussing slowly. He was not, he freely admitted, a morning person. Sam was. He was holding a mug of coffee and a piece of toast out to Josh. ‘Here. Come on. We’re gonna be late for staff. Josh groaned. ‘I don’t wanna go in. I don’t feel good.’ Sam smiled, the memory of the previous night still in his mind. ‘I do.’ Josh pulled a face. ‘Tell Leo I’m ill.’ Sam climbed onto the bed, kissing Josh gently. He smelt of smoke, aftershave and…’Josh, where’s Lexi?’ Josh looked at Sam, his eyes big. ‘She was lonely. I…’ Sam sighed, peeling back the sheet. The kitten lay curled up; her back pressed against Josh’s hand. Sam picked her up, feeling her contented purring through his shirt as he carried her back to her cage. ‘Josh, not in the bed, okay?’ Josh’s voice was full of reluctance. ‘Okay.’ ‘Hurry up. I’ll wait in the car for you.’ Josh smiled. He liked it when Sam negotiated the early-morning DC traffic. He could spend the whole journey just looking at his lover. ‘Hey, Toby, CJ, look. It’s the Karaoke kids.’ I can’t resist as Sam and Josh walk into the office, a few seconds apart. And to think I bought their line about saving money by sharing an apartment. I watch them closely as they walk towards us, but, apart from the fact that Sam is blushing and Josh is trying not to, they look no different from two days ago. Toby and CJ grin, and CJ has to add: ‘I’m sorry we had to miss the performance.’ Even Josh blushes at this, and I’ve had enough. Since my own spectacular marriage break-up, I have had very little interest in other peoples’ relationships. Especially when we’re talking about two people I work with. ‘Okay, can we start the meeting now, please?’ Four pairs of eyes focus on me, surprised at my sharpness. I shuffle the pile of paper in my hand, then get up from the desk. ‘Okay, what’s everyone doing today?’ |
