Title: Fear of the unknown –
Part One Fox had seen the flyer,
fixed to the tree by the water fountain as he had jogged through the park. Two
days of convincing Walter that the new club advertised would be full of people
they didn’t know followed. Two hours that afternoon
Walter fussed and objected, leaving Fox and Alex wondering if they would get
Walter out of the house, much less into the new club itself. However, as they pulled up,
there were already groups of older and younger men, and a few women, walking
into the brightly-lit entrance and Walter relaxed a fraction. Sitting with a drink,
watching Fox and Alex chatting to a group of people around their own age,
Walter turned as a hand dropped onto his shoulder. ‘Hey.’ ‘Hello.’ Walter nodded
politely, hoping his lack of response would tell the older man he was not
interested. ‘They
yours?’ The man nodded at Fox and
Alex, smiling. ‘Yes.’ Walter said shortly. ‘Lucky
you. You trust them when you’re
all the way up here?’ Walter frowned. ‘Yes.’ The man shrugged. ‘Guess
they’re better trained than most here.’ Walter turned in his chair.
‘They’re not ‘trained’, they’re faithful.’ Backing off at the angry
tone, the older man put up his hands, palm out. ‘Easy son.
Just being friendly.’ Walter sipped at his drink,
relieved when Fox and Alex turned at that moment, looking up at him. He smiled
and they turned back to the bar. When he looked again, a
moment later, Fox was alone, and Walter’s experienced eye picked Alex out of a
crowd heading for the men’s room. ***************** The hand on his shoulder
made Walter tense and he turned, seeing the familiar face of the older man. ‘The dark haired boy. He’s in trouble. In
the men’s room.’ Walter’s rapid movements
were at odds with his bulk and those he pushed aside were surprised by his
speed. The two men standing outside
the men’s room did their best to keep Walter out of the room, but within
seconds one was doubled up on the floor, his hands between his denim-clad legs,
the other was leaning against the wall, blood flowing freely from his nose and
mouth. Walter pushed the door open
and walked in, taking in the three men, two holding Alex face down over the
sink, bare from the waist down, his head almost hidden in the deep stainless
steel bowl, the third standing behind him, jeans and underwear pooled around
his ankles. ‘How the Hell did you…’ Walter pulled Alex’s
attacker towards him, punching him hard. As he dropped, the two men holding
Alex couldn’t move quickly enough, fleeing the room, mumbling excuses. Without
support, Alex slid to the tiled floor. Ignoring the carnage around
him, Walter crouched beside Alex, lifting his head, his eyes checking Alex to
try to discover how badly hurt Alex had been before he intervened. He knew if
Alex had been penetrated, he could disturb forensic evidence if he touched Alex
too much, and contented himself with holding Alex close to him, rocking him
gently. ‘Shhh…I’ve got you now. It’s okay. You’re
safe.’ Looking up, he was surprised
and relieved to see the man who had alerted him to Alex’s plight. ‘Call 911.’ The grey-haired man nodded. ‘On their way.’ ******************* The police arrived, took
note of Walter and Fox’s explanation that they were former FBI and Walter
carried Alex out to the waiting ambulance. Alex whimpered fearfully as the
paramedics assessed him, set up an IV and strapped his gurney onto the metal
shelf attached to the vehicle wall ready for the journey. Walter climbed in and leaned
down. ‘Alex, it’s okay. I’m here. Fox is here.’ ‘Walter?’ Alex whispered,
clearly struggling to concentrate. Some ‘negotiation’ with the
paramedics was swiftly conducted and Fox climbed in beside Walter. Walter leaned over the
trolley. ‘We’re here Alex. Shhh…rest now.’ Obediently, grateful for the
instruction, Alex closed his eyes and hardly noticed the journey to the
hospital. ******************** Fox paled and had to lean on
the wall for support as the doctor explained that it had been confirmed that
the patient had not been sexually assaulted. He decided to skip the detailed
explanation of how they would ascertain how badly injured the patient was. Fox
wanted to shake the man and remind him ‘the patient’ had a name, but he took a
deep breath and continued to listen. ‘The police are here. They want
to know if…’ He looked down to the chart he held. ‘…Mr
Krycek…will press charges.’ Walter shook his head. ‘No.’ ‘Um…Sir…in
the circumstances.’ ‘No!’ Walter barked,
regretting his tone as the doctor took a step back. ‘Mr
Krycek won’t be taking this further.’ The doctor shook his head.
‘Okay…but those guys can do it again if they’re not caught.’ Walter turned his back on
the doctor and Fox’s eyes followed him. ‘Can we see Alex?’ The doctor nodded at the
younger man. ‘Of course. Follow me.’ Alex lay on his side, the
bedclothes pulled up around his curled body. Walter approached him, standing at what he judged was a distance at which Alex
wouldn’t feel uncomfortable. Fox decided Alex wouldn’t care and sat at the end
of the bed, his thigh clear by inches of Alex’s feet. ‘Alex…’ Walter hesitated,
looking to Fox. Alex shook his head
slightly. ‘Leave me alone.’ His whisper made Walter
cringe and he turned to leave, not realizing Fox wasn’t following. ‘Alex, I’m sorry.’ Alex heard Fox’s soft
apology and turned slightly. ‘Sorry?’ Fox nodded. ‘It was my idea
to visit the place.’ Alex rolled onto his back,
gasping at the discomfort. ‘I wasn’t watching. I let them crowd me. I’m getting
lazy.’ Fox’s tears darkened the
blue woolen blanket covering Alex’s lower body. ‘I should have come with you.’ ‘To the
men’s room?’ Alex managed a soft
chuckle. ‘I think the guys watching the security cameras would have liked
that.’ Fox laughed too and put a
gentle hand on Alex’s arm. ‘You need anything?’ ‘Walter.’ Alex said tiredly. ‘Okay.’ Fox got up and walked
to the door. Walter was leaning against the wall a few feet down the corridor
and he looked up as Fox walked towards him. ‘I should have been down
there with you.’ Fox sighed, shaking his
head. ‘We’ve already done the fault thing. It wasn’t my fault, it wasn’t your
fault and it wasn’t Alex’s fault. Come on back in.’ Slowly Walter followed Fox
down the corridor and into Alex’s room. Alex looked at Walter. ‘Get
me out of here. Please?’ Walter nodded. ‘Sure. Let’s
call someone.’ Walter leaned forward and pressed the buzzer above Alex’s head. ***************** Walter prepared an evening
meal – grilled chicken and baked potatoes – which he hoped would be easy on
Alex’s system. All three ate in near-silence, the tension building to the point
at which Fox apologized for setting his water glass back down onto the table a
little loudly. Alex pushed his chair back
from the table and looked from Walter to Fox. ‘It feels like you’re trying not
to talk about what happened. I want to.’ Fox nodded. ‘Okay. Um…sure.’ Walter got up and began to
clear the plates. Alex frowned. ‘Walter?’ Walter continued into the
kitchen. ‘Talk to Fox. He’s the one with the Psych degree Alex.’ Fox and Alex exchanged a
glance. Fox got up and followed Walter into the kitchen. Alex sighed and
finished his drink. ‘This is about Alex, Walter,
not you.’ Walter shook his head, his
back to Fox, his hands busy rinsing the dishes. ‘No,
it’s about me. Thinking I can take care of you.’ Fox walked up behind Walter
and put a hand on his shoulder. ‘You can. You do. But we’re big boys. We get to
go and do stuff without you watching us.’ Walter shook Fox’s hand off.
‘Not any more. I’m not letting you out of my sight. Either of
you.’ Fox laughed. ‘Walter, you
can’t…’ Walter turned suddenly, his
expression startling Fox who took a step back. ‘Oh yes I can.’ ******************** Fox decided a good night’s
sleep would shake Walter out of his mood and got up, yawning. ‘Night Walter. Night Alex.’ ‘Where are you going Fox?’ ‘Bed
Walter.’ ‘Okay. Alex, come on.’
Walter got up, stretching out a hand to Alex who had been curled up in the
armchair. ‘I’m not tired Walter.
There’s a…’ ‘Bed. Now. Up!’
Alex decided not to argue
with Walter. ‘Okayyy.’ Sighing, he let Walter help
him to his feet. ‘We’re all going together
Walter?’ Fox asked, testing a theory. ‘I told you earlier Fox.
You’re not going off anywhere on your own.’ Fox looked at Walter’s set
expression and laughed. ‘Walter, we’re in our house…’ ‘Bed Fox. Now.’ Walter interrupted. Giving in, Fox lead the way
upstairs. He knew Walter would have calmed down by the morning. Wouldn’t he? Continued in Part Two End Return to the X-Files Fic Index Return to the West Wing Fic Index
