Prior to last night, although I had undoubtedly seen the name here and there, I had never conciously heard a single song by The Damned.
I saw them perform at the Fetish Masquerade Halloween Ball and they were fantasic, song after song with punch and style and vigor. The first thing I noticed (not even knowing what band was on stage) was the skill and confidence of the singer - he seemed so very much at home on the stage friendly and yet oddly superior as if he knew who he was even if you didn't.
The band worked like the proverbial "well-oiled machine", smooth, energized gliding from one song to the next effortlessly. With no hesitation or compromise. The bastards seemed to be having an even better time than the audience who were ecstatic. They played an amazingly long set with a frenetic circus-like finale and seemed as if they could have easily kept going if it were not for the obligation of stopping at some point.
The guitar player in addition to be extremely versatile and sounding wonderful proved it is still possible to do something new and unexpected with your hair.
To say the lady bass player played as well as a man would be an insult suffice to say she integrated and support the overall musical context perfectly.
The keyboard player and drummer did what they do so well the band sounded as if they have been together forever and could do anything.
Meanwhile, the enthusiasm I am expressing here is negligible compared to the joy and ferocity with which they assaulted, excited and entertained the audience.
If you are currently incarcerated and have the possibility of escaping long enough to see their show do it! It will be worth whatever additional time gets added to your sentence. (Just don't hurt anyone badly to pull it off.....)
