Lomax@Nation, Liverpool

Thursday 15th May 2003

The Damned back in Liverpool again - and playing noted dance venue The Lomax (Cream to some of you) a fact not lost to the dear Captain who mentioned the wheel turning 'full circle' and how dance music 'was dead'.Good on ya Cap'n - tell it like it is.

The three support bands struck me as follows:

0898 - sorry guys but the Buzzcocks were first and better. Leave 'Love Bites' behind and get a style of your own.

Zombina & The Skelletones - oh dear, must we put up with this crap every time the Damned play Liverpool? Get a life the lot of yer (especially the bass/keyboard player)!!

Goldblade - I thought they were excellent. Reminiscent of early Clash in their style and some very witty songs. A band I shall look out for.

The Damned were on form and Dave Vanian looked great. 'Disco Man', 'Plan 9', 'Ignite', 'Democracy' , '13th Floor Vendetta' - I couldn't have picked the set list better if I had been allowed to choose it. 'New Rose' and 'Love Song' were missing but I don't mind. Great version of The Doors 'Break On Through' during the middle section of 'Neat Neat Neat' and the surprise inclusion of 'See Her Tonite' was a bonus. 'Street Of Dreams' sounded big and dramatic but I never will take to 'Eloise' live.

Anyway, a great night and roll on the next tour........

Another...

This was the second time I've seen the Damned, after going to the Llandudno show in December. That was a very strange venue for the Damned to play but this was a great venue for the Damned to play. The lomax has a capacity of about 300-400 and was full. There was a great atmosphere.

The first two support bands were pretty bad and it seemed like it was their first concerts. However, the third support act were Goldblade, who gave an energetic performance and seemed to have acquired a few new fans by the end of their set.

The Damned came on at about 10:30 and we really excellent. There was a lot of energy from the band and the crowd were buzzing too. Dave Vanian's voice was excellent,as too was Captain's guitar solo's and playing in general. The songs were rolled off one by one, in no particular order: She, Democracy,Would you be so hot?, Song.com, Eloise, Neat Neat Neat, See Her Tonite, Plan 9 Channel 7, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Amen, Smash it Up, History Of The World and others. There was no Love Song which disappointed me a little but Eloise was superb live.I know a lot of Damned fans don't like it because it's a cover but it was really good live.

I just hope that the Damned get a new record label to release a new album.I think most people would agree that Grave Disorder was great.
