The Exit, New York City, NY

Tuesday 19th August 2003

The show at Exit was fantastic! Took a while getting to it, but when the time came, it was well worth the wait! The club was amazing, huge disco with an entire tier of windows w/velvet curtains where the other musicians (I assume) would part the curtains and look down onto the dance floor and then close them again! Like a castle! The ladies' room doors had lace!

Jed, the merchandise lady, was a doll. I bought shirts for MBs who couldn't attend, which appeared to be everybody as I saw no one else, just a teen who seemed to be BTBW, but who seemed baffled when I tried to say hello. Any other MBers there?

The show: Thought I'd miss first few groups, but didn't. D.I. went on first, with singer wearing same The Damned tee shirt I was, so neophytes thought they WERE the Damned! Why? Generic punk.

Then Balzac, whatta show, but like heavy metal, got to see a skunk hairdo!

Then...Agnostic Front. I've never seen anything so horrible in a rock club, and I've been trapped in a fire! An hour of hardcore hatred. Horrible. And they didn't mosh. They tried to kill each other!

Then came blessed relief...the suprise (to me!) of The Dickies! Wow! Pop punk and comedy. We were hysterical with laughter! And the props and Ozzy and Who tunes, done better than the originals! Excellent!

And now we waited...(and not only did the crowd NOT get smaller after hardcore punks left, but eventually grew!) And we waited. So long that the crowd got cranky! Finally, the spooky music...and The Damned!

Well, 4/5ths, as Captain wore a "bucktooth" mask all night! Waited all my life to see them and didn't see Mr. Burns at all. And he wore shorts and a tank top! Hey! I wanted nudity or fun outfits, but hell, he can do whatever he wants!

Pinch was handsome and a great drummer, Patricia was lovely and pregnant, Monty was adorable and DV. What can I say. First elegant suit, and then less and less until is releaved the "puffy" shirt of my dreams (and my posters)! I thought he'd have to dress punk as part of his "fiend" contract! He wears what he wants!

The music was fantastic but two standouts for me, Smash It Up with harmonies and keyboards! And then, Finally, after waiting all my life (I was busy in the heavy metal field), History Of The World!

There are no words. Harmonies and special musical effects. How to get a copy of HOTW Live?! It's always been my favorite song, period. But now, it's immortal.

And, oh, DV, he hated the barriers we were kept behind...so he jumped off the stage and climbed over another high barrier to sing to us gals at the front, face to face! We screamed like it was The Beatles on Ed Sullivan!

And then it was over.

I only stayed long enough to see the place almost empty! Then stragglers came to see the misfits (more were there for the Damned!) Then saw my ex, Marky Ramone, be introduced before sitting down to his peronalized drum kit (jeez!). Then Jerry Only said he was gonna F the S out of us, and that hardcore began again and here I am!

Now I've done and seen everything I've wanted to do and see. Off to Rhode Island for one last gig this year! And the Dickies will perform as well. Gonna be a great show!

A Perfect Night!
