ROADMENDER - NORTHAMPTON
Thursday 9th December 2004

This one had my now traditional start of yet again getting stuck in traffic on the M25 (crawling along for what felt like about three hours in second gear) which meant I arrived part way the support band's (The Avengers) set. Bit of shame because they sounded pretty good - Captain certainly liked them and named checked them several times during the evening's proceedings.

The set list was the same as the others from this tour although These Hands definitely seems to have gone West. Naturally the songs were all played with the customary style so instead of my usual droning on I'll do this one by picking out the highlights.

•Plenty of onstage banter (although poor old Captain seemed to have a bit of a cold);

•Captain announcing that they'd written a song about Absinthe called Magic Potion. "No we haven't" said Dave. "Shhh. They don't know that" said Captain "True" replied DV

•Mighty fine version of Magic Potion - it just gets better. Could well be a hit if released as a single methinks;

•Cries of "Short and snappy" from Pinch when Captain started one of his ramblings "Lanky and mouthy more like" said DV.

•DV and Captain have a bit of natter during the (extended) quiet bit of Eloise, which ended with DV in mock surprise saying "Sorry - I'd forgotten about you lot"

•Captain giving a punter a glass of Absinthe just before, er, Absinthe;

•DV telling us that I Fall was such an old song he'd recorded it before he was born;

•A brilliantly atmospheric Curtain Call with DV doing the opening vocals shrouded from view by a cloud of dry ice. The rest of the song was done backlit by silvery light. Excellent on stage lighting throughout the show;

Jet Boy Jet Girl with DV doing the first bit of the backing vocals from behind Monty's keyboard. And Ali (and friend - at least I think there were two of 'em but my memory seems to have failed here) from the MB joined in too;

•Captain telling the crowd not too listen too closely to the JBJG lyrics "Otherwise you'll go all pervy. Like me"

•Monty emerging from behind the keyboards during New Rose to do some wild cavorting about;

•Talking of Monty he did the opening classical style having been dubbed "Ludwig Van Monty" by Dave;

•Captain's rant before History of the World. "the two most dangerous people in the world leading us to oblivion - Cliff Richard and Phil Collins" (turned out it's actually George Bush and Tony Blair).

Once again a top notch evening's entertainment. Trying to find my way back into the multi storey car park after wandering the deserted Northampton streets and subways and then getting stuck in a traffic jam (this time on the M1 by way of a change) at 1 in the morning wasn't quite so much fun.
