The Culture Room, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami,
FL
27th October 2001
I've waited 12 years to see The Damned. Yes, it's been that long since they last showed up in South Florida. Dave really hates the sun you know!
This time around was a much better show than when I last saw them on the Final Damnation Tour. Set list included Plan 9 Channel 7, New Rose, Eloise, Smash It Up, Love Song, Disco Man (with Disco ball included), Wait For The Blackout, songs from Grave Disorder including Democracy, Would you be so hot.., Song.com as well as Captain singing in the good ol' pink tu-tu.
The only unfortunate thing about the show is that it wasn't promoted well. I really expected to see more people there. I found out the day before the gig that they were going to be there! (Found out from a small ad in the paper provided by Virgin Mega Store that was promoting Grave Disorder). I had a fit and purchased my tickets immediately.
I did get to meet Captain and he was such a nice bloke! We were joking in the parking lot and he gave me some chocolates! I must say, that veggie diet is agreeing with him; he looked great! Dave of course looked stunning in his Victorian garb. (Long cloak, poet shirt, gloves) and he was even doing this little 'Elvis the pelvis' type dance! They really looked relaxed and were having fun.
If you check out Captain's tour log, it will note that Dave was having Martinis at a Tiki Bar down the road.... No wonder they played until around 1:30 am!
This was a costume party/show with a black balloon drop and free "hotter than hell" blood drinks! So in the meantime, yours truly was anxiously awaiting her favorite band whilst anxiously sampling some brews. Burp!
The Briefs opened for The Damned and they were quite good. (Reminded me of early Buzzcocks and they were all bleach blonde w/shades a la Captain) I got a great view of the show being right in front and The Briefs were pogoing in back of me! They were really into it as was I. This was one of the greatest shows of all time. I will truly never forget that night!
Hopefully and wishfully anticipating the next gig--please not another 12 years from now, I'm not getting any younger ya know!
