Dingwalls - London
22nd August 2001

We had been at the previous (Tues.) night gig; now we were back for more.
There is no point in doing a review of the first night because it has already been done, and very eloquently, by Gina Snowdoll, Mr Claypole and some others. And we couldn't really add any more 'cos they had already said it all. We totally agree - Dingwalls first night gig was absolutely fantastic!
By time we arrived, the support band (Anti Product) were half way through their set. And as with last night, they were really quite good and went down well with the crowd.
After them, we were treated to another support band, Dr Spacetoad, with Captain on Bass, and Monty on Drums!!! This was an unexpected surprise, and were a really good build-up to the Damned coming on!
The
Damned came on at about 10.30pm. Last night they had started off with the
'Beauty Of The Beast'. We were
hoping they would do the same again tonight, but it was a slightly different
set. So it was straight into 'Democracy?' followed by 'Song.com'.
Again we were delighted that they played most of the tracks from the new album.
Personally, we think that all of the new songs sound absolutely brilliant
live!
As with last night, the heat was unbearable. At one point, Captain joked "can you stop sweatin' so much!" We are pleased to say that the certain "core of fans", mentioned by Gina Snowdoll, were not so evident tonight. There seemed to be a more relaxed atmosphere, even the band themselves seemed to enjoy the night more. Captain even treated us to glimpse of his tu-tu! Once again, they ended with 'Smash It Up'.
The Damned had given us another blistering night! (Not just because of the heat!) They gave a first class performance and I feel sorry for those that couldn't make it to the second gig - it was magic!
Moaner Lisa and Ma M.
And another....
It has got to be said that this band can sure play live.
They did not open up with Beauty of the Beast tonight which was a bit of a shame because I think that is the perfect opener for any Damned gig.
The Damned played all the set with energy and vision, songs such as Democracy, She, Amen, etc were played like old favourites and I hope these new ones get played at future gigs.
This band seem to me to be breathing a new lease of life, the music is so fresh and upbeat. I urge all the younger kids to try out this band, you don't need "Slipknot" and "Type o Negative" what you need to listen to is the Damned, taste the difference.
Back
to the gig, Captain was excellent on guitar as usual. Patricia was excellent
on base. Oh Pinch, how good is this guy! Monty excelled on keyboards. Then of course
Dave Vanian, his voice is better than ever, so powerful and haunting.
The Damned look comfortable with each other and I really hope that they stay together for a long time to come.
Thanks for a great performance, thank you for the night.
