Rock Café - Stourbridge
16th June 2001
How good was this gig!!!! I was well impressed which was more than could be said of last time I saw them (Dudley Jb's - March 1997). The current line up seems to have gelled really well since then and I must admit the new material they played...especially Democracy sounds like classic Damned (far better sounding than the songs off the I'm Alright Jack LP). Plenty of old faves too, including: Lovesong, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat, Just Cant be Happy, Looking at you, Disco man, Smash it up etc.
The
high point of the evening was Curtain Call .... awesome livesong if
ever there was one. I was also surprised to here this line up do corking renditions
of the mid-eighties hits Shadow of Love & Eloise.....I didn't
think those songs would come out of the mothballs again! There was good banter
between the crowd and the band ....the Captain was on fine form even when
I shouted out about his Auntie and his Weetabix!!! He even treated the crowd
to a rendition of Happy Talk.
(Right: Captain with his can of Red Bull)
All in all the best Damned gig Ive been to in years.....my faith has been
restored!

Another one...
We'd heard that the support band wouldn't start until about 9.15pm. So we thought, if we arrive about 9.30pm that would give us plenty of time to get a good spot - wrong! When we got there the place was already full and was getting fuller by the minute. We ended up at the top of a flight of stairs leading to the Emergency Exit.
It was 10.15pm and there was no sight of the Damned, but the crowd were being very patient. 10.25pm and they were starting to get a bit restless now. We heard a few disgruntled fans complain that they couldn't get to the bar (because of the huge number of people), to get a fill-up. By now, the place was bursting at the seams and they even opened the Emergency doors. (One step backwards and we would've been out the door!)
10.30pm and a big cheer went up as the Damned came on stage. We had been at Letchworth the night before and it had been an absolutely brilliant gig which we didn't think could be bettered. The stage here was smaller than at Letchworth, which meant that D.V was a bit restricted - no room to whirl about. But that didn't hinder his, or the others', performance!
The set-list was the same as the night before, and like the previous night, the new material went down very well indeed!
The atmosphere at Letchworth had been really good, but here it was even better. There seemed to be even more banter from the band tonight. Captain paid tribute to Joey Ramone, placing a Ramones T-shirt over his mic stand. The crowd cheered and started chanting "Hey ho lets go!".
The place was so full, people were literally packed together like sardines. Some people did a bit of moshing but it was confined. Even so, people were happy and enjoying themselves, even if the heat was overpowering. Just before singing "Shadow of Love" Captain mentioned something about air-conditioning (which I didn't quite catch), but D.V jokingly sang "Don't be afraid to die of as-phyx-iat-ion!"
After Neat Neat Neat the band went off stage and Johnno put in an appearance. (Many people in the crowd were pleased to see him.) He whipped-up the crowd shouting for the Damned to come back on. Captain appeared and treated us to Happy Talk.
When
the rest of the band came back on they did Love Song, and followed
that up with a unique version of Eloise, with D.V singing a snippet
of 'Something In The Air' (Thunderclap Newman - I didn't know who
that was by, but Ma M. did!) in the middle. Once again they finished the
set with Smash It Up, and despite the tight conditions and extreme
heat, just about everyone in the room was moshing!
Another absolutely fantastic night!!!
