STOCKTON FANHS CHAPTER MINUTES
April 7, 2007

President Terri Torres called the meeting to order at 11:30 AM, after an interesting presentation by Lynda Maghoney Montano entitled “Roots in the Delta—the Filipino Experience.” She accompanied her talk with an extensive photo display. (See synopsis below)
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Maria Vea, Bob Cabigas, Anita Bautista, Mel LaGasca, Violet Dutra, Fran Estoista. Guests present: Kilusan students Chrystle Mamaril and Chris Carvalho.
The following information was circulated during the meeting:
ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES:
Bob Cabigas moved and Anita Bautista seconded the motion to accept the minutes of March 3, 2007.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
A. Membership – Violet Dutra reported:
New members as family: Kristin Cabigas Perez and son, Andre. New senior members: Carole Cuizon Arca and Patsy Cardona. Get-well cards sent to Frank Tibon, Jerry Paular, and Anthony Engkabo.
B. Collections – Bob Cabigas reported that Anita Bautista picked up the wok donated by the owners of The Sunny Place Home. If anyone has something to put into the storage areas, they should call Bob at (209) 463-3961.
C. Activities – Violet Dutra and Mary Louise Lopez reported:
Possible sites for October 2007, Recognition Awards Event: Following places were contacted:
When site and date are determined, then caterers are to be contacted.
It was suggested to add the airport facility as a possible site, comparing costs and availability. In addition, Mel LaGasca will reserve the Social Hall at the Filipino for the time being. The possible date is October 20, 2007.
D. Education/Exhibit Committee—Bob Cabigas and Anita Bautista reported that during the month of April there is a FANHS exhibit on “Filipino Women: Family and Friends” at the Maya Angelou Library. It was suggested that since May is Asian American month, FANHS should have an exhibit in one of the libraries. Virgie Melear will be contacted to see if anything has been set up for May and the upcoming months. In November plans are to feature veterans. It was also discussed about looking into an informational booth next year at the Asparagus Festival. Terri will check online for booth fees and requirements.
E. Historians – Moreno and Deanna Balantac could not be present so they contacted Terri with their report ahead of time, which she appreciated. They continue to request and collect photos of chapter activities. Photos taken of the speaker and presentation of today will be submitted to the Historians.

B. Patrick Johnston trophy update – placed on hold until Moreno Balantac has contact information.
C. Stockton Pinoy Cookbook: It was reported that not many recipes have been submitted as of this date. If not enough are received by April 30 deadline, may have to postpone printing to a later date. This project is being planned for both Little Manila and Stockton FANHS Museum fundraising.
D. PBS documentary update: There will be a preview of the documentary on April 30 at Chavez Library. Invitations are being sent out by KVIE and RSVP will be necessary. The documentary, entitled “Little Manila: Filipinos in California’s Heartland,” will be aired as part of the PBS Viewfinders series, and is scheduled to air on May 2. Refer to local listings for time.
E. Arcadia Book – Rico Reyes and Dawn Mabalon are willing to work on an Arcadia book on Filipinos in Stockton. Those present at the meeting suggested that a committee be formed including other FANHS members to help develop the book.
F. Visiting students and panel discussions held at Daguhoy Lodge –Anita Bautista and Terri Torres reported that more students visited this year than ever before—totaling 60 one day from Southern California, and 9 on another day from Stanford. KVIE filmed part of the first visit for the documentary.
G. April 2007 newsletter – Terri distributed copies to those present. The rest of the issues will be mailed out.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
A. Kilusan students announced that their Pilipino Cultural Night will be on Sunday, April 22, at UOP. There will be a short play, “Pahiyas”, and a presentation of dances on the stage two different times in the day (1PM & 5PM). Tickets are $10 in advance, and $15 at the door. B. Mel LaGasca circulated information and a flyer about his niece, Christina Clifton, Vice President of Food and Beverage at MGM Mirage, Las Vegas.
