FANHS STOCKTON CHAPTER

Meeting Minutes for Saturday, March 4, 2006

By Stephanie Teczon, Secretary

Call to Order:

President Terri Torres called the meeting to order at 10:12 am at Dameron Hospital, Conference Room B. Guest Speaker Dillon Delvo of Little Manila had not yet arrived so the following information was circulated:

- Rio Grande FANHS Newsletter and Brochure

- Central Coast FANHS flyer for mural dedication on March 5, 2006

- APIA (Asian Pacific Islanders Association) 'Our Voice' brochure

- Information on Sacramento Great Valley Center Event in May

- Yoly Tolentino: “Que Sera Sera: A Tribute to Doris Day” on Saturday, April 1, 2006 at the Stockton Empire Theatre

The FANHS National Conference in Hawaii was discussed:

- Terri read from a letter received from National FANHS updating us on the conference planning progress. National requested that reservations should be made as soon as possible and asked chapters to donate an item for the silent auction. Suggested items were discussed - books, posters, etc.

Attendance:

Due to the number of new attendees, each person introduced themselves. Members were Bob Cabigas, Jerry Paular, Sr., Evangeline Kilmer, Violet Dutra, Deanna and Moreno Balantac, Dick Teczon, Lupe and Frank Tibon, Anita Bautista, Terri Torres, Stephanie Teczon, Mel LaGasca, Sue Caballero Mangrobang, Virgie Zambra Melear, and Maria B. Vea. Guests present were UOP Pilipino Kilusan students Jennilee Sabado and Rong Srey, Sacramento FANHS Chapter VP Frances Tibon Estoista, and Little Manila Foundation members Vince and Remy Reyes, and Dillon Delvo.

Acceptance of Minutes:

The minutes of February 4th were approved as distributed.

Guest Speaker:

Dillon Delvo and Vince Reyes spoke on behalf of the Little Manila Foundation. Past and current activities include:

- Weekly tours are given of the area with local students in San Joaquin County and college students from UCLA, Berkeley, San Francisco State, and Sacramento State.

- The Little Manila Crab feed will be Friday, March 10th at First Presbyterian at 7:00 pm - Anita Bautista donated a music CD for their raffle on behalf of the chapter.

- A 'Fight the Blight' is being schedule in May for the Daguhoy Lodge. Last August's 'Fight the Blight' of the Iloilo Circle was held with Bahala Na Escrima and local youths. Local dignitaries such as Mayor Ed Chavez attended and participated.

- Per Vince, there is no other known site in the United States that is doing what Little Manila is doing with capturing and preserving an area such as this: an area representing an ethnic group's past history. This would serve as a model for other groups.

Announcement:

The UOP Pilipino Kilusan Club's Pilipino Cultural Night (PCN) is Sunday, April 2nd at the Faye Spanos Concert Hall. There are two showings: 1 pm and 5 pm. Pre-sale tickets are $8 and at the door, $12.

It was moved, seconded and passed that the FANHS Stockton Chapter agree to place a half page ad in the program. The ad is due March 13th. Stephanie Teczon will provide the advertisement to Jennilee Sabado before that time.

Committee Reports:

 A. Membership: Violet Dutra reported. There were currently 173 members with 59 in arrears. There were two new members: Father Paul Manzano and Terri Rubaines. The membership categories were:

Family - 68  Individual - 16 Seniors - 79  Students - 10

 B. Collections: Bob Cabigas moved the MacArthur Hotel sign into storage. President Terri Torres discussed a change in how storage payments should be made. To avoid missed payments (since the storage place does not sent out reminder-bills) and to avoid late fees, it was moved and seconded that the storage payments be set up for automatic payment on a credit card. Violet Dutra would incur this expense on her personal credit card and submit a reimbursement form when charges are made.

 C. Education: Currently there is no one to chair this committee. Activities include speaking to schools and setting up displays. 'Talk Stories' hosted by Anita Bautista will be held in June and July.

 D. Activities: Mary Louise Lopez was not present. It was reported, however, that she continues to receive donations for raffle prizes. She is collecting donations for the May 13th Golf Tournament, August Polynesian Nights with Guest Danny Inosanto, and the October Recognition Dinner. The Moose Lodge, Stockton Airport, and the Filipino Social Hall are suggested locations for the August and October events. Terri will check with Tony Somera for his suggestions for the August event. Having the October Recognition held as a luncheon versus a dinner was discussed. To not conflict with other Filipino organization events, President Terri Torres will check with Virgie Navarro of the Filipino American Educators group if they have an event scheduled in October. We're looking at October 14th or 21st as possibilities for our event. The availability of the Stockton Airport and its capacity will also be checked.

 E. Exhibit: Currently there is an exhibit at the Margaret Troke Library titled “Filipino American Woman - Her Family and Friends” for the month of March that was set up by Bob Cabigas, Anita Bautista and Virgie Melear. A flyer with a picture of Eudosia Juanitas, currently age 95, taken in the 1930's was passed out for members to copy and distribute for posting.

 F. Historians: Deanna and Moreno Balantac have completed the 2005 chapter activity binder. This was passed among the group to view. They will be starting the 2006 binder.

Business:

A) Treasurer Report - Virginia Melear reported the following account balances:

a. Museum Checking  $16,246.02

b. CD Equipment  10,485.18

c. CD Building   20,006.08

d. FANHS General Checking  4,610.62

Mel is checking on obtaining a CPA or an accountant to review our financial reports, and the possibility of hiring an outside person to be our treasurer.

B) The FANHS National Museum Project - Update on the May 13th Golf Tournament - Museum Chairman and Golf Tournament Chairman Mel LaGasca distributed a handout of the current status. Again, we need at least 72 golfers for this event and many volunteers. Volunteers will be organized and assigned duties for either the golf tournament and/or the picnic. Training and orientation of volunteers will be done as the event nears and duties become more specific as the program of events becomes available. Mel encouraged all those interested to mail in their registration forms whether golfing and/or picnicking, this will make for a fun time for all family members. Mel is tracking all payments and forms submitted for the event. Weekly meetings with the event committee have been held since January. Another committee meeting will be held after this general meeting. Sacramento FANHS donated $104 to the museum fund at their February Installation event.

Announcements:

1) The Central Valley Asian Chamber of Commerce - Both Terri Torres and Anita Bautista attended the January mixer. Anita Bautista attended the February mixer and will attend the March mixer.

2) Stockton FANHS has received a copy of the complete 'Stockton Speaks' CD, which is available to review upon request. There were 54 interviews that tell the story of three generations of Stocktonians from different cultures. It is in PDF format. Refer to STOCKTONSpeaks.org.

3) On April 1st, the Haggin Museum will have free admission for a Filipino and Cambodian Festival. Check hagginmuseum.org or our April calendar.

4) Students from Stanford University will be visiting Stockton during their spring break to tour the Little Manila area. They will make arrangements with Anita Bautista.
