9th Annual Awards Recognition Luncheon, Oct. 18, 2008 – We received a new offer from the Mekong Harbor Restaurant, reducing the costs from $138/table of 10 to $90, plus tax and tip. This compares to the $85/table of 10, plus tax and tip at China Palace. No sodas are included at either site, but a sound system is included at Mekong Harbor. Which place to pick now?
Mel LaGasca moved to reserve the Mekong Harbor restaurant. Vote was taken and it was unanimous to try the Mekong this year.
Manuel Bonzo was asked to write the Biography of his father, Cecil Bonzo, one of the first organizers of the FANHS Stockton Chapter, to be submitted as one of this year’s nomination for the posthumous award. The deadline is July 1 for award nominations and Manuel said he would try to gather information on his Dad before then.
Dion Calzado mentioned that he knew of a buffet restaurant in the Hammer Ranch Center that charges a low fee to use their facilities. He will get more information for us.
Education/Exhibit– Virginia Melear and Anita Bautista
Anita reminded us of the Saturday, March 8th, Weston Ranch High School Community Health Fair from 10 am – 2pm. Stockton FANHS will have a table with information and the “Filipinos in Stockton” book for sale. She said that she could use some volunteers to help. She also announced that Month of May we will have a display in the Chavez Library regarding the “Filipinos in Stockton” book. She coordinates with Mary Jo, who is in charge of such exhibits and book signings. A book signing event with Dawn Mabalon will be made available soon, except on May 10, which is our Golf Tournament/Picnic at Micke Grove. Mary Jo is waiting for a response from Dawn. Also, the month of October is the other time we exhibit at Chavez Library, maybe on Zoot Suits.
Historians– Moreno and Deanna Balantac
Deanna showed the Stockton Record article on the Book Launching of “Filipinos in Stockton” and the Lodi Sentinel article written about Filipino students excelling in school. The subtitle was “Why do Lodi Unified Filipino students get top scores in the district?” The reporter interviewed Tex Mabalon, Jr. and Tex Mabalon III, student at Lodi’s high school. These papers are saved for the history album. Deanna reminded us to bring in any newspaper articles on Filipinos and give to Deanna, as well as photographs of any FANHS events.
OLD BUSINESS
Filipino-American History 2008 calendars - Anita said that there are still a few calendars left and will be sold at $15.00. If it is mailed, there is a mailing fee of $3.00. Little Manila has more calendars left also.
“Filipinos in Stockton” Arcadia Book – Terri Torres reported that over 316 books were sold at the book launching. She said that Arcadia is pleased that the “Launch” was so successful and that this was the largest number of any Arcadia titles sold at a one-day event. Anita has the rest of the books for sale – our chapter received 338. If anyone wishes to purchase a book they should be referred to Anita. If they wish it to be mailed, there will be a mailing fee of $3.00 per book after they remit their payment of $20.00 or more if the order is for more than one. Terri will check at the post office to see what actual shipping costs are and update our members. For each book we sell, the profit will be turned back into the Museum Fund. As noted in the Treasurer’s Report, we owe Little Manila $5,407.08 for the expenses incurred in creating, buying, and launching the books. Little Manila will pay us $3,133 for the books sold at the launch. Anita will ask Addie Suguitan for posters and postcards to use for publicity. Terri Torres will contact Dawn Mabalon regarding selling the books at the Alaska conference in July – who will received the profits from the books sold there.
OTHER BUSINESS

Deanna moved to advertise our May 10 Golf Tournament (Museum Fund Raiser) for a half page @ $50.00. Mel seconded it, motion was carried. Mel and Terri will draft an ad and Terri will send it to Bahala Na before the March 15th deadline.
Terri announced that Little Manila (Dawn Mabalon, Dillon Delvo and Elena Mangahas) is coordinating with Stanford for another group of students who want to visit Stockton and tour Little Manila on Monday, March 24. We have been asked to provide a panel of speakers for the students to hear about some of Stockton’s Filipino history. Terri will contact Liberty Reforma, Professor of the Biology Dept., Stanford University for confirmation. Anita said that probably the meeting place will again be the Daguhoy Lodge building at 201 E. Hazelton Avenue.
Terri mentioned that Gary Giovanetti, a FANHS member, is running for San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors, and sent us an invitation to attend his fundraiser. Anita Bautista will attend on behalf of Stockton FANHS.
Anita Bautista mentioned that she has been volunteering at the Central Valley Asian American Chamber of Commerce’s office to become more familiar with their operations and the publishing of their newspaper. She enjoys it.
Moreno Balantac passed around old photos and letters containing the name Julian Casogoc/Casocoe and wanted the name mentioned in our mailer to see if anyone recognizes the name. If so, please contact us!
A new meeting place needs to be found. Mel LaGasca moved that we try to find a permanent meeting place, either free space or paid space up to $50/month or less. Violet seconded it and motion carried. Terri will inquire at Safeway, Raleys or some banks where they have conference rooms available. Anita and Mel will also ask around and Mel will check again with Dameron Hospital for the Annex space. Letty Perez will check with Trinity Presbyterian Church.
